Fixes gh-1724
Refs gh-2439

compat version of #2439

Tests pass at least on IE 8-11, Firefox 39, Chrome 43, Safari 6-8, Android 2.3-4.0,5.0 & iOS 6-8.

+44 bytes (not so nice as on master ;))
