There's also typos --diff that outputs a diff, but it returns with exit status 0 which I gather is not good for check_diff (if that's right, could we document it?)

--diff is definitely preferable since hk knows exactly which changes to make and doesn't need to run it twice, could we just do something like output=$(typos --diff {{files}}); if [ -z "$output" ]; exit 1; fi?

Sure, done in 0e83a3e. I'm not sure if the builtins.md doc is spot on, copied the way gomod_tidy has it.
