Discussion of #911 shows us we need to know more. The current direction is to require GLSL discard/kill semantics everywhere, but this might have implementation friction where not natively supported. One potential is to leave kill vs demoteToHelper as implementation defined, which is MVP but it would be better for portability to enforce a stricter behavior.
