DESTDIR has a well established purpose https://www.gnu.org/prep/standards/html_node/DESTDIR.html It is a suffix for all the files to be installed. And it is used by package managers who installs the files into some $tmpdir before creating a package. Change the build commands to follow this convention. Add BINDIR that does the same what previous did $DESTDIR.
