from my side, I've used multiple solutions (and sometimes a mix of them):

k8s cron jobs - rake tasks
whenever gem - rake tasks
sidekiq cron gems (there are multiple different options...) - sidekiq/activejob

Personally, I'd love an access to a simple http client akin to the one in Go/Node sdks:

Then I could define a CronJob class like this

      status: "in_progress",
    )

    block.call

class RealCronJob < CronJob

  end

(it'd be nice if capture_check_in didn't blow up and caused the job to retry) 🙈
