#860 isn't cleanly rolling into the engine due to side effects of turning off NSAsserts in release. Revert until the fixes are in the engine.

Funny, I've had this tab open in a browser all week because I've been so tempted to give it another shot. @jmagman are you going to take a look? If no one gets around to it by the weekend, I'm kind of tempted to try to sneak it in with all the other cleanups.
