If you are not sure if you need tests, consider this rule of thumb: the purpose of a test is to make sure someone doesn't accidentally revert the fix. Ask yourself, is there anything in your PR that you feel it is important we not accidentally revert back to how it was before your fix?

doing it in a constructor seems like it would mean we're doing it more than once, when we only need to do it once, right? would the binding be a better place for it maybe?

Can you leave a pointer to the documentation of what this is? Just so we can follow the breadcrumb trail if someone new needs to clean this up later.
