(Material3) SearchAnchor.bar picks up app InputDecorator theme and it cannot be removed #126623

@rydmike

Description

@rydmike

Is there an existing issue for this?

Steps to reproduce

When using SearchAnchor.bar we always get the app's InputDecorationTheme applied on it.

If we add a custom InputDecorationTheme to the overall app theme, the SearchAnchor input entry picks it up, we may not want this design on it.

We can not give it a separate InputDecorationTheme style or set it back to default for the SearchAnchor only via its component theme(s), there are no input decorator properties. Even wrapping the SearchAnchor with a Theme using a default const InputDecorationTheme(), only removes it on the SearchBar, not on the SearchView.

Run the included sample to see the issue with SearchAnchor.bar when using a custom InputDecorationTheme.

Expected results

Expect the SearchBar and SearchView to not be impacted by overall app InputDecorationTheme, or to be able to style them back to desired style to look like the default, or to use its own custom design.

Like, e.g. using their default look:

Actual results

If we add an app level custom InputDecoratorTheme the SearchAnchor.bar picks up the style. We may not want that on the SearchBar and SearchView, we might prefer the default there or another custom style.

The SearchBar has code that attempts to get rid of borders, in the ambient theme of input decorator, but it does not remove all borders, so the ones used in this example will remain visible, despite its attempt to remove them.

Even if we add a Theme wrapper (2nd SearchBar in the example) that gets rid of the app level themed InputDecorator on a new Theme in widget tree surrounding only the SearchAnchor.bar, it goes away on the SearchBar as expected, but it remains on the SearchView overlay despite this wrapper. The SearchView overlay must be in another context that we cannot impact by wrapping this part of the tree in a new Theme.

Proposal

Both the SearchBar and the SearchView, need to have a decorator property with their own InputDecoratorTheme in their component themes SearchBarThemeData and SearchViewThemeData that default to const InputDecorationTheme() when not specified. They should have a decorator in their widget properties as well.

This would get rid of the SearchBar and the SearchView inheriting the decoration from the ambient InputDecoratorTheme and the need for trying and failing to remove e.g. borders and styling from it in current code. It would also add styling capability to Bar and View for any custom styling needs on widget and theme level.

SearchBar trying and failing to remove its border decoration:

because the decoration removal is incomplete. Other border props defined in the ambient theme in this example will leak through.
