Material3: TimePicker clock dial use wrong spec color and its web spec has a mistake #118657

@rydmike

Description

@rydmike

TimePicker does not follow M3 spec and its WEB M3 spec has a spec typo

The Material 3 spec https://m3.material.io/components/time-pickers/specs depicts in light theme a TimePicker looking like this:

image

Visually the unselected time entry and the background color of the clock dial share the same color.

The unselected Time entry container is stated in WEB spec to be surface variant, and looks to be so visually above too:

Screenshot 2023-01-18 at 3 26 57

The clock dial is stated to be using on surface variant in the spec:

Screenshot 2023-01-18 at 3 28 44

This makes no sense since that would be an almost black color in light theme, which is not depicted in the image and would look terrible. Clearly the M3 WEB spec intends to say that clock dial should be surface variant, the same as an unselected time entry field, and as depicted in the image.

Next let's check what M3 mode TimePicker uses as background for the clock dial in Flutter, it does this:

Screenshot 2023-01-18 at 3 56 05

Here:

return _colors.surfaceVariant.withOpacity(_colors.brightness == Brightness.dark ? 0.12 : 0.08);

Expected results

Expect to get a TimePicker matching the M3 spec (its actual intent anyway) visually, and that M3 Web written spec should match its visual intent presentation like this:

Screenshot 2023-01-18 at 3 39 41

Actual results

In Flutter we get a time picker with wrong clock dial color:

The written dial color spec on the Material 3 design Web site has a mistake, most likely a typo (db link source or however it is generated). Following the current Web M3 spec would actually produce a TimePicker looking like this:

Clearly not intended 😃

ping: Taha @TahaTesser. Pierre-Louis @guidezpl, Taha mentioned you may be able to bring the M3 WEB spec issue forward.

The gap in Flutter spec is an easy fix, well it would be if it was normally coded, but I have no insights in how you guys bring stuff from the M3 token db and make the code generated code from it, where the issue is.

EDIT:

Found this closed issue #105899 where you @TahaTesser had noticed this issue too. It was closed via #115298 by @darrenaustin, some past issues were fixed, but clearly there is still an issue with the clock dial color, both in token DB and on WEB spec, at least if the WEB M3 visuals are to be trusted, and they are the ones imo looking correct, well sensible at least.
