There are quite a number of pull requests and issues filed for distcc, indicating that people are using it and care about it.
I wrote the original code many years ago, but I haven't personally run distcc for years, so I'm not best placed to be the maintainer, and it's not the codebase on which I'd most like to spend my volunteer time.
If you are interested in helping move distcc towards a new release please reach out. That could include, in the short term:
- Making a new release of what is currently in the main branch, after some manual testing.
- Reviewing and commenting on or merging currently open PRs.
- Responding to open bug reports.
If someone else is interested to do this, or try it, I'm happy to help or guide them.
