Schema 1 (application/vnd.docker.distribution.manifest.v1+prettyjws) has been officially deprecated since containerd v1.7 (PR #6884).

We have planned to remove the support for Schema 1 in containerd v2.0, but this removal may still surprise some users.
So, in containerd v2.0 we will just disable it by default.

The support for Schema 1 can be still enabled by setting an environment variable CONTAINERD_ENABLE_DEPRECATED_PULL_SCHEMA_1_IMAGE=1 (ctr users need to specify --local too), however, this workaround will be completely removed in containerd v2.1.

Schema 2 was introduced in Docker 1.10 (Feb 2016), so most users should have been already using Schema 2 or OCI.

Thanks for the ping. How would a Kubernetes user know if they were using such an old image? Do we surface it somewhere?

@thockin In addition to the two mechanisms @AkihiroSuda described in #9765 (comment), there's also a deprecation warming (visible with ctr deprecations list or through the introspection API) since 1.6.27 and 1.7.12.

I think I can say with confidence that nobody looks at logs unless things are already going wrong.

If you merge this, apps which used to work will start failing.

Do we need to remove this support?

Can we report this back through CRI and make kubelet set something in status, at least? If we did that for 2 releases, I would probably be OK with this. I just DREAD that angry customer call - "You broke my app!!"

We have been deprecating Schema 1 informally since c. 2017 and formally since 2022.
This long-planned deprecation is one of the reasons why we are bumping up the major version, and this span should have been enough for Google's customers.

The deprecation has been also advertised via docker pull, so they should have been aware of this deprecation if they use Docker:

For GKE customers, Google should write a DaemonSet to scan the result of ctr deprecations list to print warnings (via GKE console, email, node annotation, or whatever else). GAR should print warnings too.

Please don't mistake my concern - GKE customers are kube users, but I also don't want EKS users or AKS users or Openshift users to break.

I think I can say with confidence that nobody looks at logs unless things are already going wrong.

Yeah. It's definitely proven to be that, no matter how many warnings you add, users tend to ignore them until things fail. Even for the docker run case, where it's more likely for a user to be attached to the command (not for automation), I've frequently ran into users complaining "why didn't you warn us?"

❓ Could we make this fail hard and loud, but provide a temporary escape-hatch? (e.g. env-var to re-enable)?

Of course to some extent, containerd "v2" could be considered a major version bump, so breaking changes allowed when looking at it from a SemVer perspective, but there's many APIs and specs involved here, all competing for their own versioning and stability promises;

  • containerd ABI / configuration (v2)
  • containerd API (is still "v1" (?))
  • OCI distribution spec is still "v1"
  • CRI API

All of that combined makes it "complicated".

I should mention that the topic of "v1 images" came up again in a recent discussion with the Docker Hub team; Docker Hub still has the "v1 conversion" enabled, which converts "v1" images to "v2", and they're still planning to sunset that feature (docker/roadmap#173);

Containerd does not depend on that functionality, as it does this conversion on the client side (the code discussed in this PR). The same (currently) doesn't apply to Docker Engine, which was at the root of a lot of going "back-and-forth" on the equivalent PR in Moby ("it's confusing if we remove support, but still works with containerd and/or BuildKit").

there's also a deprecation warming (visible with ctr deprecations list or through the introspection API) since 1.6.27 and 1.7.12.

I for sure would love to see the deprecation being set in motion though, because nobody should depend on these old images, and the v1 format is very insecure.

Updated the PR to just disable it.
The support for Schema 1 can be still enabled by setting an environment variable CONTAINERD_ENABLE_DEPRECATED_PULL_SCHEMA_1_IMAGE=1, however, this workaround will be completely removed in containerd v2.1.

Opened a PR to print deprecations on any invocation of ctr command:

Disable the support for Schema 1 images

Schema 1 (`application/vnd.docker.distribution.manifest.v1+prettyjws`) has been
officially deprecated since containerd v1.7 (PR 6884).

We have planned to remove the support for Schema 1 in containerd v2.0, but this
removal may still surprise some users.
So, in containerd v2.0 we will just disable it by default.

The support for Schema 1 can be still enabled by setting an environment variable
`CONTAINERD_ENABLE_DEPRECATED_PULL_SCHEMA_1_IMAGE=1`, however, this workaround
will be completely removed in containerd v2.1.

Schema 2 was introduced in Docker 1.10 (Feb 2016), so most users should
have been already using Schema 2 or OCI.

@thockin does this implementation satisfy your concerns?

(also I see some PR's linked to this one, do we need to wait for those to be accepted, or all good?)

We should look in Moby as well to start doing the same (disable by default, but escape-hatch) perhaps that would also help get the ball rolling.

* `containerd-<VERSION>-<OS>-<ARCH>.tar.gz`:         ✅Recommended. Dynamically linked with glibc 2.31 (Ubuntu 20.04).
* `containerd-static-<VERSION>-<OS>-<ARCH>.tar.gz`:  Statically linked. Expected to be used on non-glibc Linux distributions. Not position-independent.
