This change removed the containerd specific parts of the plugin package to prepare for its removal from the main repository. The registration singleton is also moved to a separate package as well so that the plugin package can be used without initializing the singleton.

Separating out the plugin package and registration makes it easier to decrease the dependency loop for external plugins which need the plugin package to register themselves. ZFS is temporary removed until the plugin package is moved because of the the existing dependency cycle.

Additionally, the global registrations are now immutable to prevent unintentional side effects when using global registration objects.

Maybe unrelated to this PR. But this can point to non-existing directory if the user uses remote snapshotter that might not have the rootdir managed by containerd daemon.

There are many things wrong with this code and the approach of using a static path for determining relevant filesystem info. Unrelated to this PR but something to be figured out. There is an effort within signode to define a better stats API including for filesystem data. This is especially relevant as we try to support multiple snapshotters within CRI.

This was pretty good timing 😆 @ktock just pointed me here, but we've been seeing a kubelet error related to this for a couple months now apparently. #9216. That change makes it so snapshotters can return whatever the rootpath is (especially useful for remote sns).

That might be a question for the Windows folks. The only real use of it is in a comparison for the Windows runtime, but seems that should be in the scope of deprecation and removal.

I miss runtime v1 plugin because the external runtime can be built with containerd.

Move plugin type definitions to containerd plugins package

Generalize the plugin package

Remove containerd specific parts of the plugin package to prepare its
move out of the main repository. Separate the plugin registration
singleton into a separate package.

Separating out the plugin package and registration makes it easier to
implement external plugins without creating a dependency loop.

Do we consider to remove the go-plugin support?
IMO, Go has more successful on static build. Go plugin is kind of against the go design.
And we, containerd, suggest user to use binary plugins or RPC-based plugins.
I'm not sure that how many users use the go plugin.
Since go plugin has too many restrictions, I don't think the number is large.
So, suggest to deprecate it in v2.0 and remove it in v2.1

Welcome to the v2.0.0 release of containerd!

The first major release of containerd 2.x focuses on the continued stability of

* `containerd-static-<VERSION>-<OS>-<ARCH>.tar.gz`:  Statically linked. Expected to be used on non-glibc Linux distributions. Not position-independent.
