The virtio-blk spec supports error reporting to the guest via setting VIRTIO_BLK_S_IOERR on the status byte. Adding such support can avoid virtio-blk worker threads to terminate upon IO errors received on the host (which terminates the whole Cloud Hypervisor process). It could potentially provide better user experience, such as keep the VM running if the IO error is not from the rootfs.
