A couple of comments inline, mostly around the need of dropping the CLI changes to not break stable branches.
Back to your questions:
Is option.Config.JoinCluster used only by the external-workloads feature? Discovered via https://github.com/cilium/cilium/blob/pr/brb/rm-ext-wl/pkg/health/server/server.go#L446.
Yes, that is the agent-side implementation of external workloads. The flag can be dropped, as well as all the code blocks guarded by it.
Shall we change the client-secret name - https://github.com/cilium/cilium/blob/pr/brb/rm-ext-wl/install/kubernetes/cilium/templates/clustermesh-apiserver/tls-helm/client-secret.yaml#L3? Or can we remove it? From the top if-statement it looks that it is used by others too.
That file can be dropped, as only required by external workloads.

hello 👋 leaving a comment here for future reference. we should be careful about removing features from cilium-cli. the current assumption is that the latest cilium-cli release should work with all the maintained cilium versions (v1.15, v1.16, v1.17) : https://github.com/cilium/cilium-cli/blob/fe7545806e60fc537165e4fe415937bfd178fb32/README.md?plain=1#L44-L46 i'll release note the change, but the consequence of breaking this assumption is that we can no longer upgrade cilium-cli version in stable branch workflows unless we also stop testing external workloads in stable branches:
ideally we should handle feature removals from cilium-cli more gracefully, something like |

Thanks for adding it to the release notes! Yes, this has been discussed during the review process, with the conclusion that it was acceptable stopping upgrading the Cilium CLI in the external workloads workflows in stable branches, and potentially just drop the workflow entirely in case of problems. External workloads has been a beta (and known to be very fragile) feature forever in any case. I think we just forgot following up with updating the renovate config. @brb Are you taking care of that? Otherwise I'll go ahead and open a PR. |
