Problem / Motivation
S/MIME based encryption has a high barrier to entry for non-enterprise users. Solutions broadly require either/both (1) all parties must pay recurring annual fees to obtain trusted certs [and sacrifice trust over private key generation], (2) all parties must complete non-trivial local CA cert generation with OpenSSL and then manually import all other parties' CAs.
This is effectively a non-starter for using S/MIME.
Proposed Solution
OpenPGP is simple, fast and free--it's broadly implemented and it is far better suited for non-enterprise users.
