Not completely trivial to do correctly, so we're deferring for now. The simplest implementation would strip all ESC and controls as that would allow us to just keep reading the string keeping track of state up until we hit an non white space / control character. A more complex ones could preserve the control sequences and characters.

The right side of the trimming might be a little simpler as we can just dump everything after the last non-control non-whitespace character.
