I think we should use a web-based tool for translations. The alternatives I’m familiar with are Weblate and Transifex. I prefer Weblate because it’s more open source.
Both solutions offer free accounts for open-source projects and allow any user with a Google or GitHub account to translate. You can set up synchronization with GitHub. We can have the translations for the application, the man pages, the website, and the documentation all in one place. Synchronization can be set to manual or automatic.
From the Weblate application, the administrator can choose to notify users. Each user can sign up as a translator for a specific language. Whenever the administrator wants, they can click a button in Weblate to open a pull request on GitHub containing all the changes made to the website.
I’m a member of other projects like qBittorrent, and that’s how we work. Typically, a few weeks before releasing the final version, we sync all the changes in Weblate and notify the users. Users have two weeks to make any changes they deem necessary. And the day before the release, we open a PR on GitHub and merge it.
This system would be compatible with the current system of submitting pull requests to the repository. But it’s more useful because most translators are regular users, not programmers. Translating shouldn’t require technical knowledge.
