Implements a new `testsEnvironment` boolean config option to wp-env that allows skipping the creation of test Docker containers (tests-mysql, tests-wordpress, tests-cli, tests-phpmyadmin) and their volumes. Defaults to `true` for backward compatibility. Also splits Gutenberg's single .wp-env.json into two config files: - .wp-env.json: Development-only config with testsEnvironment: false - .wp-env.test.json: Test config for CI, used via --config flag Updates all test-related npm scripts and GitHub workflows to use --config .wp-env.test.json to ensure tests environment is properly initialized. Adds deprecation warning when tests environment is enabled without --config to encourage migration to the new pattern. Co-Authored-By: Claude Haiku 4.5 <[email protected]>

Adds a `wp-env-test` convenience script that wraps `wp-env --config .wp-env.test.json`, then updates all test scripts and CI workflows to use it instead of repeating the --config flag everywhere. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <[email protected]>
Add testsEnvironment: false to .wp-env.test.json and switch all container references from tests-* to their development counterparts (wordpress, cli, mysql). Since the test config already creates an isolated Docker environment via a separate work directory, the extra tests containers are unnecessary. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <[email protected]>

I haven't code reviewed, but it tests pretty well, and I like this direction.
One thing is that if you try to run e2e tests locally and forget to start the test env, there's not much to indicate what happened. I wonder if npm run test:e2e could automatically start the test env, or check that the test env is running and log an error if it isn't running.
A command like wp-env status that outputs whether an env is running might be helpful, not only as a user, but also for other commands that might check if an environment is currently active.
I think there's a lot of documentation that could be updated:
- contributing docs
- testing docs
- env package docs
Also a mention in the core-editor channel about the change would be good when it gets merged.

I was curious how override files will work. It looks like its still possible to do .wp-env.test.override.json.

When testsEnvironment is false, there is only one environment so the env config key should be ignored entirely. All configuration should be specified at the root level. When switching from testsEnvironment: true to false, the old test containers become orphaned because the new compose file no longer references them. Adding --remove-orphans to the down call ensures these containers are properly stopped instead of lingering on their ports. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <[email protected]>

Did some investigation with Claude. I think it might be because I tend to use a .wp-env.override.json file that points to a local git checkout of WordPress: "core": "../wordpress-develop/src",I also have the same config for my test env. Looks like it means both my dev and test envs are sharing the same locally defined wp-config including config like the site url. I guess for now I can avoid using my local checkout of core, but if there's a way to have multiple envs all point to a local checkout it'd be great to see that work. I tend to find this setup works well when I need to implement or test something that needs changes in both core and gutenberg at the same time. |

The problem is that if we "copy" the local checkout, you won't be able to make changes and see them reflected which kind of defeats the purpose of the local checkout. |

To fix e2e tests in CI, and to make instructions from `AGENTS.md` work out of the box. Previously, `@wordpress/env` was installed globally (`npm i -g`) by the e2e CI workflow. With the [recent update to `@wordpress/env`](WordPress/gutenberg#75341) (which included a major change to the `.wp-env.json` format), this has started failing. To fix this, we can simply add `@wordpress/env` as a `devDependency` to `package.json` and have it installed locally. This allows us to control the version of the package that's used. As an additional benefit, this makes local setup consistent with CI, and more reproducible. * Env: Remove coloring from usage screen `yargs` and `chalk` interact poorly, resulting in background colors assigned to the description each command being applied to the white space surrounding each command's description. * start: Remove mentions of tests environment and WP_ENV_TESTS_PORT Deprecated as of #75341 * Allow wider text formatting of usage screen `yargs` defaults to `min(80, termWidth)` chars. Try 100 instead. Also, ensure lines are still wrapped to 100 when stdout isn't a terminal (e.g. piping to `less`, writing to file). * Highlight per-command --help option And thus remove the unnecessary mention of the `start` command's `--update` option from its description. * start: Don't assume port 8888. Explain.
