When using footnote markers that are not numbers (such as [^main]), footnote commands are broken.

This appears to be because the code base is expecting numerical footnotes. See especially here ... where all existing footnotes are gathered and are presumed to be numerical.

Has textual footnotes been implemented? Can it?
