cache_req grown quite big from the original code and it turned out
that using switch statements to branch code for different cases
makes the code quite hard to read and further extend and any
modification to the logic itself is difficult.

This patch changes the switch statements to plugins with small
functions and separates logic into multiple modules. This gives
us better control over the code and improves readability and
maintainability while keeping code duplication to minimum.

At the moment only cache req user by name, id and upn is
implemented as a proof of concept. If you like it, I will
finish the rest, it won't take much time.

Good thing is that API is untouched thus existing unit tests should
remain functional without any modification.

I finished the code and split it into four commits:

Implements logic ... it is the same as in responder_cache_req.c but with added support for plugins.
Implements plugins ... add all existing functionality.
Switch to new code in makefile and #includes.
Remove the old code.

Yes, I don't understand this either, why don't we assign directly to cr->data->name.name ?

So we don't change its content if allocation fails.

OK, allocation should fail only if name is NULL or on some kind of an embedded system.

I am afraid I am not fine with this return and another one three lines below. It could sound like nitpick but I prefer to fix it.

Why are you not fine with this?

The reason is I think we have rule for one-exit-point for function. I know, it is nitpick. In this case, function is still short.
If you disagree with me -- It doesn't mind me anymore. But I will notice the same thing in longer function cases.

We don't have any such rule. It's nice to have when you do some clean up, but in this case it would be an overkill.

Yes, the one-return-per-function is only preferred when there are some resources allocated in the function. This is fine.

Does it make sense to return EINVAL here and abort cache_req_send if the plugin cannot be set?

Not really. If the plugin is missing then there is serious error in the code. But I added a check so we don't crash if such mistake ever got in production.

Total nicpick, but if you end up changing the patches, can you also log the dp_type?

Does it make sense to create "sss_dp_type_to_string" for this or will you be satisfied only with number? When nss responder is converted we can actually stop using this enum at all.

Then it doesn't make sense to add it for now.

I think it would be nice to log the midpoint here and the time as well.

Initial timestamp is basically logged in cache_req_send() with "New request" debug message. Isn't this enough? If midpoint refresh is triggered it is also logged.

Apart from the nitpicks, the code looks better to me (I like that the lookup functionality is abstracted, so adding new lookups will be easy).

I tested several kinds of lookups, including UPN, overrides (only local overrides using the sss_override tool..), byname, byuid and negative cache. Everything seems to work OK.

There is also a high code coverage.

While debugging rhbz#1396912 some deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). The removal of those functions we lose some debug messages, which is the least of problems now. Also instead of re-setting the watchdog timeout in case of time-shift (please, see b8ceaeb for more info), let's just re-set the timer's time. While debugging rhbz#1396912 some deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). The removal of those functions we lose some debug messages, which is the least of problems now. Also instead of re-setting the watchdog timeout in case of time-shift (please, see b8ceaeb for more info), let's just exit the let the monitor restart the process. A proper fix for the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock. In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. While debugging rhbz#1396912 a deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and, in case of clock screw, a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler to reset the watchdog will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. With this patch we ended up losing some debug messages as orderly_shutdown() has been replaced by _exit(). Personally I don't think is worth the trouble to try to log those messages properly in this specific case. It's really worth to mention that a proper fix the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock. While debugging rhbz#1396912 a deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and, in case of clock screw, a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler to reset the watchdog will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. With this patch we ended up losing some debug messages as orderly_shutdown() has been replaced by kill(-getpgrp(), SIGTERM). Personally I don't think is worth the trouble to try to log those messages properly in this specific case. It's really worth to mention that a proper fix the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock. While debugging rhbz#1396912 a deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and, in case of clock screw, a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler to reset the watchdog will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. With this patch we ended up losing some debug messages as orderly_shutdown() has been replaced by kill(-getpgrp(), SIGTERM). Personally I don't think is worth the trouble to try to log those messages properly in this specific case. It's really worth to mention that a proper fix the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock. While debugging rhbz#1396912 a deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and, in case of clock screw, a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler to reset the watchdog will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. With this patch we ended up losing some debug messages as orderly_shutdown() has been replaced by kill(-getpgrp(), SIGTERM) (or _exit(1) considering the cases where setting up the process group during the server_setup() has failed). Personally I don't think is worth the trouble to try to log those messages properly in this specific case. It's really worth to mention that a proper fix the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock. While debugging rhbz#1396912 a deadlock on sssd_be was noticed[0] and it's been caused by the use of non async-signal-safe functions from the signal_handler (please, see man 7 signal for more info about which are the async-signal-safe functions that can be used). In order to work this situation around a pipe has been added to the watchdog_ctx structure and, in case of clock screw, a single byte is written to this pipe (which is an async-signal-safe operation) and the logic currently done by the timer handler to reset the watchdog will be done inside the fd handler in a safe way. With this patch we ended up losing some debug messages as orderly_shutdown() has been replaced by kill(-getpgrp(), SIGTERM) (or _exit(1) considering the cases where setting up the process group during the server_setup() has failed). Personally I don't think is worth the trouble to try to log those messages properly in this specific case. It's really worth to mention that a proper fix the clock screw situation should be implemented on samba's side, by having tevent using monotonic (or boottime) clock.
