This changes the API as needed for RIOT-OS/RIOT#18942

While updating in a single lockstep would work (the RIOT PR would point to this branch, then this branch can be merged once that hit RIOT master, then a follow-up could revert the change that selects a branch in to the override), I'll try whether this can be done in a somewhat more dynamic manner, allowing riot-wrappers to work both with RIOT 2024.04 and with the upcoming master.
