As commented in the main PR, I would prefer to keep the default behaviour as multi-threaded. The warning message is a helpful addition. |

Proposed extension to #3172 in order to get to a
3.0.8release.Awaiting approval from @dchristiaens if it is infeasible to comprehensively address the multi-threaded implementation at this time.
