Follow-up to #2581 with the following changes:

  • Make button text easier to understand for non-technical users (eg "Download for Windows" instead of ".msi")
  • The first download button on the website directly downloads the file that most likely works for the given user (and added a link for further download options)
  • Deemphasize the portable installations

@JabRef/developers two further questions:

  • Why don't we provide universal installers for macos instead of intel/arm-specifc ones?
  • Do we really need options for dmg and pkg on macos? Isn't pkg enough?

Pkg contains the scripts for browser extensions

So, indeed installing via .dmg provides a suboptimal experience and users will not know about this difference, right?

There are people who can't use the installer and so have to use the dmg, it's like about the portable version

We do offer protable versions for Windows and Linux. Thus, we should provide DMG for mac. No oversimplification please.

Keep both options for macOS. Default: pkg.

(We did not see a screenshot in the DevCall, thus we comment "blindly").

But I think, it is deleted, because it is merged. Thus, OK. It is good that a bot comments with the URL.
