The latest soccer game from EA includes big features like the unfortunately belated addition of women’s pro leagues from France and England, alongside the return of Italian giants Juventus and general improvements to gameplay and visuals. More importantly, there’s also the nostalgia factor. The FIFA games have been around since the ’90s, and this will be the last entry with the FIFA branding. Starting in 2023, EA is calling its soccer games EA Sports FC. For me, though, my interest in FIFA 23 was something much more basic: I could play as Ted Lasso.

One of the stranger additions for this game is the inclusion of both Lasso — the main character from the Apple TV Plus series of the same name — and the fictional soccer club he coaches, AFC Richmond. As a fan of the show, the game, and the sport, I felt it was my duty to step into Lasso’s pullover sweater in FIFA 23’s career mode. And it’s been a delightfully strange experience, even if it’s not exactly a substitute for the show’s third season.

For starters, since Richmond isn’t actually a real team, I had to find a home for them. And FIFA lets you put them in any league you want. For maximum chaos, I decided to put the London-based club in Major League Soccer, where they’d be traveling to cities like Los Angeles, Seattle, and my hometown Toronto. It made no sense, which is what also made it perfect. fictional club and players with the real world. The game does a great job at accurately recreating the looks of actors like Phil Dunster, Toheeb Jimoh, Kola Bokinni, and Cristo Fernández so that they look largely like they do on the show. I mean, just look at that virtual recreation of Jason Sudeikis’ mustache. Seeing them in the game alongside real stars like Lorenzo Insigne and Gareth Bale was strange at first. It’s kind of like watching Juancho Hernangómez play in the NBA after seeing him star in the Netflix movie Hustle.

But I forgot about the weirdness pretty quickly, mainly because AFC Richmond absolutely dominated. While the club is an underdog in England, it turns out that if you drop them into North America, they are unstoppable. After a dozen or so games, Jamie Tartt and Dani Rojas were the top two scorers in MLS, averaging more than a goal per game each, and winger Sam Obisanya was sitting just a few spots below them. Even 40-year-old Roy Kent knocked in a few from his spot in the midfield. It got to the point that, after a 14-game unbeaten run, Mr. Lasso was constantly asked the same few questions in every post-match press conference. The team was so good that it got a little boring.

In an effort to shake things up, I tried something dramatic, inviting Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to my office with a proposition: a one-for-one swap of Jamie Tartt (arguably the best fictional goal scorer at the moment) for Erling Haaland (easily the best non-fictional goal scorer at the moment). Lasso in FIFA 23: it’s missing a lot of the personality you might expect. The characters all look right, as do the team’s stadium and uniforms (I especially love the Bantr jersey sponsorship). But once the novelty of controlling Dani Rojas wears off, you’re left with a fairly standard FIFA career mode. There’s none of the humor or heart from the show. I wasn’t expecting a full-on Ted Lasso story mode — though some voice acting would be nice — but a few unique lines of dialogue would be very welcome to differentiate the experience. At least let me spit out some tea. Right now, what’s on offer is basically a really nice skin for the standard mode.

It’s still fun to play, and I’ve actually been really enjoying my time with FIFA 23 so far; after a few years away from the franchise, it’s been a lot of fun to dig back into the new features and explore what feels like the most realistic FIFA to date. Ted Lasso was just the hook I needed to jump back into the annual series. I’m already planning on starting a second career save file to check out the new women’s club teams. Spending a season destroying teams like the Seattle Sounders has been fun, but it’s definitely gotten stale — and the dominance means that Ted has been getting job offers from around the world. Right now, I’m mulling over opportunities, trying to think what would be the most entertaining place for him to continue his career. Ted Lasso, the American-football-coach-turned-English-soccer-manager-turned-MLS-Cup-champion, taking the helm of a mid-level team in Korea? But when it came to the segment focused on Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of Cixin Liu’s The Three-Body Problem, Tudum got a little stiff and curiously boilerplate-y in a way that did little to say much about or hype up the show.

During their brief time in the spotlight, Woo, Weiss, and Benioff shared that they’ve recently completed production on 3 Body Problem’s first season and opened up about what initially drew each of them to the project. Like Liu’s novel, Woo described their 3 Body Problem as “a history of humanity from the point of first contact with an alien civilization all the way to the end of the universe,” and Weiss emphasized how they were intrigued by the sheer scale and scope of Liu’s vision.

At a time when studios have become comfortable essentially spoiling the entirety of their features and series with their advertising campaigns, there’s something slightly refreshing about how relatively little noise Netflix has been making about 3 Body Problem since news of its production first broke in 2020. But at an event like Tudum meant to signal to Netflix’s subscribers what all the fuss around its “hotly anticipated” projects is about, it was a bit of a letdown to see 3 Body Problem’s executive producers and some of its cast vaguely summarizing the show as a “big” and “complex” epic without really saying or showing anything to back those claims up.

To be fair, the true depth and breadth of Liu’s The Three Body-Problem — the first in a trilogy of books spanning multiple centuries — is difficult to sum up within the span of two minutes. Though the story does eventually become one about how profoundly the world changes after humanity makes first contact with sentient extraterrestrial life, from the very beginning, Liu contrasts its grandeur with a close-up focus on the small, pivotal moments in a society’s history that have outsized impacts on the shape of the future.

Before The Three-Body Problem shifts its focus to the different ways that Earth’s nations respond when aliens make their existence known, the novel spends a sizable amount of time setting its stage with a brutal and frank reflection on China’s Cultural Revolution. More than merely establishing The Three-Body Problem’s reality as one similar to our own, the time Liu spends examining the immediate and long-term repercussions of China’s Revolution-era policies is one of the big and brilliant ways the book prepares you for the macro view of the universe the series ultimately takes.

<div class="duet--article--article-body-component block The Three-Body Problem frames it as one relatively small piece of humanity’s record in the grand scheme of all things are also part of how the book primes you to appreciate its ideas about technological development. Technology as vectors of human evolution and the concept of societies working as a kind of organic circuit aren’t exactly unique to The Three-Body Problem. But the way Liu’s books intricately weave those ideas together and use them to ground the trilogy’s story as it becomes increasingly mind-bending is as artful as it is impressive, which is presumably what Netflix wants 3 Body Problem to be.

That was obviously the kind impression Apple wanted people to get from the handful of teasers it dropped for Foundation — David S. But if Netflix really wants 3 Body Problem to be its next big thing meant to electrify the world and convince newcomers to sign up for the streaming service, it’s going to have to step its game up quite a bit before the show debuts sometime in 2023.

Verizon’s ban “took out not only porn but also a ton of art and artists,” Mullenweg wrote in his post. “This policy is currently still in place, though the Tumblr and Automattic teams are working to make it more open and common-sense.” Tumblr is supposed to implement those policies soon, putting the site more in line with Automattic’s WordPress.com blogging platform.

“That said, no modern internet service in 2022 can have the rules that Tumblr did in 2007,” Mullenweg wrote, quoting Tumblr’s old liberal policy slogan. (If you’re wondering, it was “go nuts, show nuts.”) “I agree with ‘go nuts, show nuts’ in principle, but the casually porn-friendly era of the early internet is currently impossible.” On Tumblr, that era helped produce a lot of unique, often queer, blogs with sexual content. For now, it’s largely because of intermediaries that play a massive role in how people access the web. Payment processors have long been leery of adult content, and they’ve stepped up enforcement in recent years, in part because of concerns about child abuse and nonconsensual pornography. Apple’s iOS App Store has been staunchly opposed to it since launch. And without those two pieces of infrastructure, running a for-profit site is incredibly difficult. “If Apple permanently banned Tumblr from the App Store, we’d probably have to shut the service down,” Mullenweg noted. Some nonprofit sites that do allow things like explicit artwork — primarily the Archive of Our Own fanworks site — have remained persistently web-only despite years of requests for apps.

Meanwhile, porn companies have their own stack of payment processing services, but they’re typically far more expensive — something that nearly got adult performers banned from the subscription platform OnlyFans last year.

The issue is compounded by new rules about age verification and — although Mullenweg doesn’t mention it by name — anti-sex work laws like FOSTA-SESTA. Some of these laws are meant to combat unambiguously harmful phenomena like nonconsensual pornography, but they also add substantial legal oversight.

If you reached this article through Twitter or Reddit, you might have a fairly obvious question right now, and Mullenweg raises it: why can both those platforms, fairly unusually for modern social networks, allow a lot of porn? “Ask Apple, because I don’t know,” says Mullenweg. He speculates that Tumblr and Reddit are both too big to ban — although Apple has forced moderation changes even for giant services like Facebook.

The overall upshot, to Mullenweg, is this:

If you wanted to start an adult social network in 2022, you’d need to be web-only on iOS and side-load on Android, take payment in crypto, have a way to convert crypto to fiat for business operations without being blocked, do a ton of work in age and identity verification and compliance so you don’t go to jail, protect all of that identity information so you don’t dox your users, and make a ton of money.

[...]

I do hope that a dedicated service or company is started that will replace what people used to get from porn on Tumblr. The technology is FDA approved, and Ori Mor, co-founder of Wi-Charge, says it’s a precision transmission and requires lines of sight; the transmitter isn’t bathing the room in wireless power. You can see a video of it “in action” here.

Mor said Wi-Charge’s “AirCord” technology delivers up to 100 times more power than a standard battery, which can enable a device to do more. For example, Alfred’s Cook says there weren’t any smart mortise locks before the ML2 because a mortise lock requires significantly more power to turn the mechanism than a standard deadbolt. With the wireless power system, Alfred can do it.

<figure class="my-9 And though progress in video could be slower given the near-limitless complexity of the subject matter, the prize of seamless video generation will motivate many institutions and companies to pour great resources into the project.

As with text-to-image models, there is potential for harmful applications

In Meta’s blog post announcing Make-a-Video, the company notes that video generation tools could be invaluable “for creators and artists.” But, as with text-to-image models, there are worrying prospects, too. The output of these tools could be used for misinformation, propaganda, and — more likely, based on what we’ve seen with AI image systems and deepfakes — generating nonconsensual pornography that can be used to harass and intimidate women.

Meta says it wants to be “thoughtful about how we build new generative AI systems like this” and is only currently publishing a paper on the Make-A-Video model. Earlier this year, for example, a group of researchers from Tsinghua University and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) released their own text-to-video model, named CogVideo (the only other publicly available text-to-video model). Training content was sourced from two datasets (WebVid-10M and HD-VILA-100M), which together, contain millions of videos spanning hundreds of thousands of hours of footage. This includes stock video footage created by sites like Shutterstock and scraped from the web.

The researchers note in the paper that the model has many technical limitations beyond blurry footage and disjointed animation. For example, their training methods are unable to learn information that might only be inferred by a human watching a video — e.g., whether a video of a waving hand is going left to right or right to left. Other problems include generating videos longer than five seconds, videos with multiple scenes and events, and higher resolution. Make-A-Video currently outputs 16 frames of video at a resolution of 64 by 64 pixels, which are then boosted in size using a separate AI model to 768 by 768.

Meta’s team also notes that, like all AI models trained on data scraped from the web, Make-A-Video has “learnt and likely exaggerated social biases, including harmful ones.” In text-to-image models, these biases often reinforce social prejudices. For example, ask a model to generate an image of a “terrorist,” and it will likely depict someone wearing a turban. However, it’s impossible to say what biases Meta’s model has learned without open access.

Meta says it is “openly sharing this generative AI research and results with the community for their feedback, and will continue to use our responsible AI framework to refine and evolve our approach to this emerging technology.”

Until now, the only way to fully realize a “complete” Sonos home theater system meant coughing up $749 for the Sub subwoofer — on top of whatever you paid for a Sonos soundbar and rear surrounds. That total can quickly balloon to just shy of $2,000 depending on the soundbar you want. For many consumers with Sonos’ step-down products like the Beam and Ray, the Sub was impractically expensive and out of reach.

That’s why there’s now the Sub Mini. First revealed by The Verge back in May, Sonos originally intended to ship the $429 subwoofer well before the October 6th release date it ultimately settled on. But a rough financial quarter and underwhelming demand for the entry-level Ray soundbar led the company to push back the Sub Mini’s release by several weeks.

Now, the smaller, more affordable subwoofer is nearly here. I’ve been testing it for over a week, sampling the Sub Mini’s low-end performance across TV, movies, video games, and music. If you’ve been counting down the days until you can get your hands on one, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. There are still circumstances and use cases where the larger, pricier Sub is the better choice. But so long as you plan to use the Sub Mini in a small- to mid-sized room, it has all the kick necessary for movie night.
