Monetization

There is a proposal to make Web Monetization a web standard. In the meantime this is a method for making it a possible reality.

What?

The web monetization standard is a proposal to help generate income for content creators through micro transactions. Users load up an account with funds, and then as they browse the web they get prompted to give a small amount to content creators who have opted into the process.

The whole thing is private. Content creators do not know who has tipped them

How?

  1. Sign up for an account on Coil (more platforms will be available in the future).
  2. Enable Web Monetization in the Toolbelt settings.
  3. 'Start Creating' on Coil, and sign up for a payment service (I used XRPTipBot) and then grab your 'payment pointer' value. Enter the pointer in the module settings.
  4. Install the Coil browser plugin (for Chrome and Firefox). If this becomes a standard it will get built into your browser.
  5. Profit!

You should also consider signing up to pay other creators. You subscribe for a small amount and then the funds get distributed amongst the sites you visit.
