SPACE 1889: City-State Spearmen

This unit is made up of ex-Grenadier High Elven spearmen, from Forlorn Hope Games. There are several styles in the range, and I chose the one with the upswept shield because it resembles a shield in the RAFM Martian Legion.

As is my wont, I replaced the spears with pole weapons made from floral wire. The supplied spears were fine, but wire is stronger and I wanted a variety of cutting blades rather than spears.

There are two types, in equal numbers: A straight blade, and a curved glaive blade. I formed the blades and then hammered them flat on a small anvil. Each has a small tsuba punched from sheet plastic.

The officer is a spearman with his spear replaced with a wire sword. The sword was made like the glaives, but with a short handle. The standard was printed on my computer, and the pole was twisted from the same wire as the spears..

This unit matches two other units and a gashant cavalry unit in style, so they all have similar standards, in different colours. The four units make a good force on their own.

Barsoom: Large Flyer

Back in January, I wrote about a new flyer that I commissioned from RedVectors. I asked for a ship, essentially the same as their small Martian Flyer, but with a deck 1.5 the length and width.

He speedily did his drawings and cut out a prototype, and it was exactly what I had wanted. The price was good, and the postage (To Canada from the UK) was the same either way, so I bought two. After all, they’ll be good for Barsoom and SPACE 1889. It is 10 inches in length.

I chose the railing for the front of the ship: There is an optional position for a gun mount provided. The only modification I made was gluing a couple of round ‘woodls’ to the side as a tribute to the Helium flag in the John Carter movie.

It’s easier and neater if you paint the railings and trim pieces before assembly.

He also lengthened the stand, front-to back, so that it would balance better and be more stable. It came with a base the same size as the smaller flyer, so I made a larger base plate from a dollar store clipboard.

Overall, the ship is as sturdy as MDF will allow, but you have to watch it when you pick it up: If you squeeze the side railings they will tear out, as they are set very close to the side of the deck. A third support might help there.

Here it is beside the original smaller (7 inch) version. The extra inches make a big difference!

SPACE 1889: Martian Musketeers

I wanted a unit of Martian Musketeers, and this is it: The musketeers are converted from an older Grenadier miniature, Open-Handed Elf, from Forlorn Hope Games. Just a bit of bending, and muskets from the parts box

The standard bearer and officer are from the Wood Elf Command pack. (Although the standard bearer is 25 years older than the rest of the unit.)

Overall, I’m pleased with the way it turned out.

Forgotten Heroes: Distracterella

I first read of the ‘Forgotten Heroes Challenge‘ on Roger Webb’s blog, Rantings From Under the Wargames Table (Well worth a read, BTW). The challenge is to make a figure of a hero, for whom there is no decent figure available. And it has to be finished in June.

As it turns out, I had a figure that fit the bill, and was done in June. It just took me this long to take a picture.

She is Distracterella, from the webcomic League of Superredundant Heroes. She is a Villainess whose power is to distract with her body. (It is revealed that the blue part of her costume is in fact body paint, and the stars are removable.)

The base figure is a female dolly from Bronze Age Miniatures. I added hair, and all else is paint.

So yes, she’s late, but I don’t care.
