Times are tough nowadays. We Sythee can survive well enough without food or shelter, but we crave contact from our own people more than anything. There was a punishment Valernus used to dole out when Valgus and I were children, most of it relating to a sort of imprisonment, where we were forbidden to leave our rooms for days or weeks at a time.

I've heard that human children are given such punishments too, though only for a few hours or overnight, when they've done something particularly heinous. While 21st century human children have their video games and toys to keep themselves amused during these times, Valgus and I had little to nothing of any entertainment in our personal rooms during the eleventh century; the last time I remember times like these revolving around my brother, before his untimely death a century later.

Always the good sons, Valgus and I stayed the entire time, never choosing to break the laws of the house and sneak out, or try to entertain ourselves. We were being punished for something and as such, we *had* to learn the reason behind the punishment, or else Valernus would double the sentence.

It was only later in life, after the Cavanaugh karesh had moved to Berlin, that I realized why Valernus had punished us. He had chosen the weakest of infractions to punish us for, but he kept us safe and hidden within the walls of our great home, each time exiting the safety of the stone walls himself and fighting off those who would do us harm. Like the vampires humans had come to cherish and write fantastical stories about, we were hunted and hated for merely existing, but Valernus kept us safe.

Our punishment then meant life later, though for Valgus, his gradual descent into madness at being cooped up for far too long became his downfall, causing the end of his life to ride upon an arrow tipped with poison.

A poison that was not supposed to exist in human hands in the twelfth century...
