Committees are where most of the real work of the ACG takes place. Many of the policy and project decisions reached by the ACG Board of Trustees begin with ideas raised at the Committee meetings and developed by a specific Committee.

In 1985, the College had 18 different Committees, and a total of 102 committee members. By contrast, the College now has 24 different Committees with nearly 800 committee members. This is the source of the College’s growth and strength.

We have closed the application period for assignments for October 2026 – October 2027. Notifications regarding assignments will be sent in July/August 2026 to everyone who applied.

Responsibilities as Stated in ACG Bylaws

This Committee shall be responsible for identifying and bringing forth issues which concern minorities and ways in which the College can better serve the interests of minority members. The Committee will promote educational programs and provide input on research activities for the College on GI conditions that impact disproportionately minority populations. The Committee will serve as an advisory group to the ACG on other health-related issues that impact minority populations and will also make specific recommendations, as well as assisting with efforts to actively encourage membership of minorities in the College, and developing means to increase participation and visibility of minorities in College-related activities, and on the faculty of ACG educational programs.

Objectives

  1. To continue to identify and bring forth GI health issues that negatively impact minority populations and underserved populations and to develop strategies to achieve health equity in these groups.
  2. To continue to educate the ACG Membership about cultural differences of racial and ethnic groups as the United States population becomes more diverse. Culturally sensitive educational materials will be developed to improve patient-doctor interaction and eventually improve patient care.
  3. To continue to encourage the participation of ACG members of different racial and ethnic groups to be actively involved at all levels of activities within the College.
  4. To help educate students from minority populations and underserved groups about careers in medicine and gastroenterology, through outreach and mentorship.

Intersociety Group on Diversity

ACG has two representatives to the Intersociety Group on Diversity (IGD). Formed in 2020, IGD works collaboratively across the five gastroenterology professional societies (AASLD, ACG, AGA, ASGE and NASPGHAN) to guide, support, and advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the GI field. IGD serves as a cooperative forum for new ideas and cultivates conversation among GI society DEI leaders whose dedicated work together advances the entire profession. In 2022 IGD introduced a new Resources Guide highlighting the five societies’ individual DEI initiatives, research opportunities, pipeline development programs, education, and awards in a helpful at-a-glance format with links to learn more.

Goals and Responsibilities

The goals and responsibilities of the Practice Management Committee (PMC) are to provide both independent practicing and hospital owned/affiliated members of the ACG with pertinent information to help them manage and run their medical practices efficiently and in a fiscally responsible manner while delivering high quality and low cost care to their patients. As a part of these duties, the PMC is also devoted to consistently providing ACG members with updated information on national regulatory changes in the environment in which they practice gastroenterology medicine to help them adapt quickly and effectively to changes affecting their practice. These goals will be accomplished by devising an annual Practice Management Course in conjunction with the ACG Annual Meeting, developing additional practice management seminars/courses, educational material, pod casts, publications, white papers, etc. as required to maximally serve our members all while working in conjunction with other committees of the College, and being consistent with the overall ACG strategic plan developed by the Board of Trustees.

Objectives

  1. Develop and produce an effective Practice Management Course which is held yearly in conjunction with the Annual Meeting.
  2. Develop additional practice management seminars as deemed necessary by the Board of Trustees.
  3. Expand practice management sessions into the College’s Regional Postgraduate Courses.
  4. At the direction of the Board of Trustees, develop educational programs on practice management to benefit the clinical and academic practitioner.
  5. Develop, expand and update educational materials for the ACG Practice Management website and ACG Education Universe.
  6. Create practice management resources to enable members to be more effective and efficient in their practices such as coding and CPT updates.
  7. Monitor and respond to events related to the practice of gastroenterology from CMS and 3rd Party Payors.
  8. Identify and promulgate any policies affecting the practice of gastroenterology.
  9. Work in close conjunction with other committees such as National Affairs and FDA Related Matters in order to obtain and disseminate information expeditiously to our members.
