George Eliot’s Social Network
George Eliot’s Social Network
Scroll down for an interactive visualization of George Eliot’s social network. We have collected public domain portraits, lifespan information, and biographical sketches of more than 125 friends and family members.
Search the pull-down list of names or click on a portrait for a summary that focuses on each person's relationship with George Eliot (rather than on their individual accomplishments).
The summaries, largely informed by the indispensable Oxford Reader's Companion to George Eliot (2001) edited by John Rignall, represent the collaborative writing of Dr. Rilett with several research assistants, including (in alphabetical order): Sydney Baty, Susannah Boyer, Megan Ekstrom, Lindsay Roberts, Maxwell Robeson, Brandon Unverferth, and Hollie Tucker. After the editorial team completed their work, our unique visualization model was coded by Riley Jhi in 2019. The application was updated in 2022 by Libo (Donald) Sun.
The George Eliot Archive team appreciates the editorial assistance in 2019 of esteemed George Eliot scholars, Dr. John Rignall and Dr. Kathleen McCormack, for suggestions and corrections.
Future iterations will expand this visualization with more members of George Eliot's circle. Suggestions for individuals who should be included are welcome at [email protected]
