Featured Volcano
Sunset Crater
Starting off my volcano features with the beautiful Sunset Crater of the San Francisco volcanic field in Arizona! Sunset Crater is my favorite volcano and about a year ago, I finally got to see it in person! I have a huge interest in volcanos along/near Route 66 and this one has particularly enamored me (so much that I made a story setting in the same area just so my characters could see the volcano daily).
Sunset Crater is a cinder cone volcano that erupted about 950 years ago, around 1080 CE. As a monogenetic (one-time erupting) volcano, it will never erupt again. However, the volcanic field Sunset Crater is part of is on top of a continental hot spot and has a USGS hazards rating of moderate threat due to its proximity to communities, so there is potential for another cone to form in the area. There is so so much I could gush about this one volcano, but I will spare you with this limited space (for now...) and just link its official website.
