Mission Statement

The Geography Department at UNC Chapel Hill is committed to promoting diversity,  equity, and inclusiveness (DEI) for our student body, faculty, and staff. We recognize that fostering an enriching environment contributes to making us more diligent, more creative, and more productive as a collective. We welcome, value and learn from different perspectives in our teaching and research. As a discipline, geography has made significant strides toward a more integrative scholarship and academy, and we are committed to achieving more toward this goal. An integrative academic environment that values DEI helps prepare geographers to engage and become leaders in the world.

To achieve this goal, the Department of Geography and Environment is committed to:

  • Support and liaise with relevant initiatives across campus and in the discipline
  • Identify diverse academic opportunities and bring them to the department
  • Collect and distribute information about diverse resources (grants, fellowships, scholarships) available to our students and faculty for enhancing academic excellence
  • To strengthen the diversity of our faculty, we welcome all to seek opportunities to engage with us in teaching, research, and service.
  • Sponsor speakers and outreach activities on topics of high values in DEI

Please see our other pages for the latest research and teaching on these topics.
