The aim of this research study is to provide an overview of ontological and ethical paradigms on ... more The aim of this research study is to provide an overview of ontological and ethical paradigms on nonhuman animals in Western philosophy and the accounts those paradigms give on the moral status of animals, in the sense that whether interests of nonhuman animals or nonhuman animals themselves morally matter for their own sake. Instead of strictly following a chronological order; this study is maintained on three key concepts that are related to the subject: First, the Antique Greek concept of « logos » in the sense of reasoning and meaningful speech, then the concept of « sentience » which refers to a certain form of consciousness that enables a being to experience pain and pleasure, and finally the concept of « moral personhood » which designates a being who possesses inviolable moral (prelegal) rights. By focusing these concepts, the historical relationship between the "invention" of logos as a characteristic that is distinctively human and the exclusion of nonhuman animals from moral concern is inquired, as well as, practical implications and limitations of utilitarian ethics that propose the equal consideration of suffering and interests of nonhuman animals. After having presented and discussed these concepts along with the different theories that have contributed to their shaping, the work concludes that a moral rights approach that holds sentience as the only prerequisite for the equal moral consideration is a consistent and justified position and in practice this position would mean that account of nonhuman animals as a 'thing' or as a 'resource' is needed to be abandoned.

Çelişik türcülük ölçeğini oluşturma amacıyla hayvan etiği alanyazını ve insan-hayvan ilişkilerini ele alan sosyal psikoloji çalışmaları incelenerek bir madde havuzu oluşturulmuş, ardından hayvan hakları üzerine çalışan kişiler ve psikolojide ölçme ve değerlendirme uzmanı olan kişilerden görüşler alınarak maddeler düzenlenmiştir. Ölçek 7 dereceli likert tipinde tasarlanmıştır. Deneme formu, Türcülük Ölçeği, Sosyal Baskınlık Yönelimi Ölçeği ve Temel Empati Ölçeği ile beraber katılımcılara uygulanmıştır. Katılımcılar kartopu örneklem tekniği kullanılarak hayvan kullanımı bağlamında farklı yaşam tarzlarını temsil eden kişilerden seçilmiştir. Çalışmanın katılımcıları 64'ü erkek, 217'si kadın ve 7'si iki cinsiyetin haricinde olan 288 kişidir. Ölçeğin deneme formunda 24 madde yer alırken, yapılan analizler sonucunda bu maddelerden dokuzu elenmiştir. Ölçeğin 15 maddelik son halinin ᾳ=.90 puan ile yüksek güvenilirliğe sahip olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ölçeğin maddeleri, insan üstünlüğü inancı, korumacı türcülük ve dilde türcülük olmak üzere üç ayrı alt boyuta dağılmaktadır. Ölçekten alınan puanların, beklenildiği üzere, türcülüğü ölçen diğer ölçekten ve sosyal baskınlık yönelimi ölçeğinden alınan puanlarla pozitif korelasyon içinde olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ölçekten alınan puanlar, hayvan kullanımına dair yaşam tarzlarını içeren gruplara beklenildiği şekilde dağılmıştır. Bu veriler, ölçeğin geçerliliğini gösteren bulgular olarak değerlendirilmiştir.
Ambivalent Speciesism Scale: Development, Validity and Reliability Abstract The aim of this study is to develop a scale compatible with current animal ethics studies to measure the phenomenon of speciesism, that is marginalization of animals and prejudice and discrimination against animals. In order to develop the Ambivalent Speciesism Scale, an item pool was created by examining the animal ethics literature and social psychology studies on human-animal relations, and then the items were edited by taking the opinions of people studying animal rights and experts in measurement and evaluation in psychology. The scale is designed in 7-point Likert type. The trial form was applied to the participants together with the Speciesism Scale, the Social Dominance Orientation Scale and the Basic Empathy Scale. Participants were selected from individuals representing different lifestyles in the context of animal use, using the snowball sampling technique. The study was conducted with 288 participants; 64 men, 217 women and, 7 of whom are not of both genders. While there were 24 items in the trial form of the scale, nine of these items were eliminated as a result of the factor analysis. The final form of the scale with 15 items has a high reliability (.90). The items of the scale are divided into three dimensions: belief in human superiority, protective speciesism, and speciesism in language. It was determined that the scores obtained from the scale were in positive correlation with the scores obtained from the other scale measuring speciesism and the social dominance orientation scale, as expected. The scores obtained from the scale are distributed as expected among the groups that include lifestyles related to animal use. These data were evaluated as findings showing the validity of the scale.

This article aims to conduct a thematic analysis through audience comments on the 2013 movie Her ... more This article aims to conduct a thematic analysis through audience comments on the 2013 movie Her (written and directed by Spike Jonze). The movie is about the romantic relationship between Theodore, who makes a living by writing handwritten letters for others and Samantha-an operating system. In the study, the data set was created from the audience comments, and the platform called "Ekşi Sözlük" was used to reach the audience comments. An offline backup of the title "Her" in Ekşi Sözlük was created on August 17, 2022, with 773 entries. It was observed that some of the entries were not related to the movie. Those entries were excluded from the analysis. After the exclusion process, the remaining 370 entries were analyzed using the thematic analysis method. It has been determined that three main themes appear in the examined audience comments: "Problems of the postmodern humanity," "Bodilessness," and "Change-Transformation," and it has been observed that these themes also contain various sub-themes. The theme "problems of postmodern humanity" consists of the sub-themes "deficiencies," "escapes," and "fears about the future." Within the sub-themes of the disembodiment theme, bodiliness is interpreted as "a positive condition," "a deficiency," or "a neutral or unimportant condition." Finally, in the theme of "change-transformation," two sub-themes were defined as "people do not change" and "people do change." The data obtained were discussed within the framework of the current literature.

Eğitim ortamlarında, travma yaşantısı olan kişileri bu uyaranların ortaya çıkarabileceği olumsuz deneyimlerden korumak ya da bu uyaranlara maruz kalıp kalmamak konusunda karar noktasında kontrol sahibi olabilmelerini kolaylaştırmak adına tetikleyici uyarılarının kullanılması gerektiği öne sürülmektedir. Bu çalışmada tetikleyici uyarılarıyla ilgili alan yazın ve tartışmalar örneklerle incelenmiştir. Yapılan incelemede "tetikleyici uyarıları" üzerine oluşan literatürde "tetikleyici" ve "travma" kavramlarının psikoloji literatüründe kullanıldığından daha farklı ve daha geniş bir anlamda kullandığı görülmüştür. Alandaki az sayıda görgül çalışma incelenmiştir. Bu çalışmanın amacı Türkçe yazılı materyal üreten ve eğitim veren kurumları ve kişileri kavramla tanıştırmak ve ileride yapılabilecek yerel görgül çalışmalar için zemin hazırlamaktır.

İnsan harici hayvanların da hissedebilir varlıklar olması sebebiyle bu değerlendirmeye dahil edilmesi hayvan etiğinin temellerinden biridir. Ancak bazı kuramcılar insan harici hayvanların gerek yasal anlamda gerekse halihazırdaki toplumsal normlar bağlamında mülk olarak konumlandırılmalarının hayvanların ahlaki bakımdan kayda değer bir biçimde gözetilmelerine engel teşkil ettiğini öne sürmektedir. Buradan yola çıkarak, eşit gözetimin mümkün olabilmesi için insan harici hayvanların mülk statülerinin kaldırılmasını ve “başkasının mülkü olmama hakkı” olarak tanımladıkları hakkın tüm hissedebilir varlıklar için bir temel hak olarak tanınmasını önermektedirler. Bu makalede, insan harici hayvanların mülk statüsünün kaldırılması yönündeki argümanlar ve bu argümanlara getirilen eleştiriler detaylı bir şekilde ele alınacaktır.
