The enormous organisational task including construction of new stadiums in four major cities as well as modernisation of transportation and urban infrastructure has to be accomplished in a relatively short time span. Not surprisingly the authorities branded EURO 2012 as a "civilizational project" considering the championship as a stimulus for the development of the country. A series of special legal, organisational and fiscal mechanisms have been implemented in order to facilitate provision of the required development. Municipal governments of the participating cities are also trying to take maximum advantage of the given chance by managing complex infrastructural projects and promoting designated areas in close proximity to the stadiums. Yet the key question of long-term economic and social effects after EURO2012 remains open for debate. The presentation focuses on the overview of special legislation, organization and financing of EURO 2012 development agencies. The key development projects in major cities of Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan will also be discussed in the context of management, implementation and problems concerning largescale complex urban projects as well as their relationship with their regional and local context.

This issue is related to finding out new and effective urban regeneration’s tools, rebuilding the identity of degraded areas by art. In the article, the idea of an American “creative placemaking” is presented and compared with polish urban regeneration case study. The specific issues discussed in the article are: the role of creative placemaking in shaping urban environment and selected revitalization’s projects of public spaces with the participation of art such as Project Raw Houses in Huston, Texas and the art project Galeria Zewnętrzna in Dolne Miasto, Gdańsk. The research attempts to answer the question whether art really has an impact on shaping the identity of a place and if contemporary artistic activities (in particular “site specific” art) are effective tools for revitalization in polish conditions.

This article focuses on the relationship between health and urban form, in particular the role of green open spaces. The goal is to identify criteria for evaluating the impact of physical forms such as streets and open spaces, green infrastructure, and built structures on urban health. These criteria are then used to identify paths for the redevelopment of modernist housing estates with the aim of improving living conditions. This challenge remains particularly significant in Poland and Eastern Europe, where a large share of the urban population lives in modernist blocks of flats. First, we examine the modernist housing concept in Europe and Poland and the guiding principles for their development, including the role of green, open spaces. Then, we refer to several studies on urban health to identify normative factors that define the open space design conditions in modernist housing estates. We appl...

Moreover the article presents the outcome of an innovative attempt at promotion of public participation introduced in university education that was built on the experiences gathered during elaboration of the pro publico bono project of the Coastal Strip development in Gdansk. The main goal of the research is to prove the importance and necessity of inhabitant involvement in strategic planning to achieve the highest possible standards of urban spatial development, especially under the newly-formed planning system in Poland. Methods used in the research are based on multidisciplinary literature studies and detailed case study of the Gdansk Coastal Strip. The method expresses the involvement of students in the on-going process of forging a new strategy for public green urban areas under transformation. Integrating a practical approach with rather idealistic visions proposed by students resulted in a strengthening of the public debate. The findings of the research shows that under circumstances where there is little interest in real participation, empirical evidence suggests that the investment and management of urban green areas can be considered as an effective factor in the building of a civil society.

Public spaces are playing a far more important role in promoting a healthy lifestyle and encouraging us to do different activities. Therefore, contemporary public spaces should enhance creativity, stimulate physical activity and influence mental health. The methodology used in the research includes literature survey, study visits and comparative analysis of some selected examples of contemporary art installations in public spaces from different European and American cities. The discussed case studies refer to different scales of urban space and diverse aspects of wellbeing and health in conjunction with art interventions. These are: Superkilen in Copenhagen and Porch Light Programme in Philadelphia as complex projects enhancing mental health and physical activity and contributing to community integration; Puckelball field in Malmö and a playground in Amsterdam in Potgieterstraat by Carve as triggers of creativity and physical activity; Flying Grass Carpet and the Rosa’s Passage in Lodz as acupuncture art projects changing the character of place and creating new bonds between neighbours and affecting the wellbeing of inhabitants. The case studies show that art used as a tool for enhancing people’s wellbeing and health is more effective when it is not limited only to the aesthetic role of art, but when it is interactive, inviting, and inclusive. The trend of designing multifunctional public spaces where art, architecture and urban design in a synergic way enhance the quality of life and public health can be observed. This leads to building healthy cities.

The aim of this paper is to examine how integrating art and cultural strategies into public space can enhance and reinforce the sense of a place. Particular attention is devoted to urban spaces that we call "places in transition", where public art improves the city's imaginative capacity, enlivens neighbourhoods, and sparks civic exchange. Research methods include multidisciplinary literature studies and a detailed case study of the Rose Kennedy Greenway (RKG) – a contemporary urban park in Boston, USA, intended to stitch together the various neighbourhoods surrounding downtown. The Greenway is also a place in transition, to which the Conservancy introduces innovative and contemporary art through temporary exhibitions, engaging people in experiences, interactions and dialogue with art. The five-year Public Art Strategy was supported by Fund for the Arts, a public art program of the New England Foundation for the Arts. The main vision of the project is to amplify the Greenway's unique characteristic through art that is connective, innovative, and celebratory. There are the two main types of projects within the Public Art Strategy for the RKG: short-term projects called "Platforms" and long-term projects called "Magnets". The particular conceptual framework is being developed to guide proposals: connection, interactivity, civic dialogue, ecology, and the environment. The article examines the case and analyses the important issues related to implementing art into a public space such as re-imagining places, short-term and long-term artistic interventions, arts and cultural programming.

The aim of the research is to present the issues connected with such barriers in the city and the ways of solving them. Main problems are e.g.: the destruction of the complexity of urban fabric, functional disadvantages, environmental and landscape threats. In order to avoid such negative effects, city should be designed as a coherent organism in terms of spatial, environmental, infrastructural, social and visual aspects. Thus, public spaces should connect an urban tissue. A technical approach should be complemented with humanistic design aspects. This can be obtained thanks to well designed and functioning public spaces that is the essence of a city. However, a good public space should meet a number of conditions. When creating public spaces, it is important not to limit it only to its physical attributes but it should lead to strengthening the relationships. The public space has to fulfil certain functions, be safe, accessible, and attractive. Only such public space can effectively connect urban fabric not only in a spatial way but also by improving the urban life. The main issue discussed in the article is crossing the borders, like roads, between green spaces and city structures. The theoretical background is followed by the assessment of two case studies: Charles River Esplanade in Boston, USA and Reagan's Park in Gdansk, Poland.

There are also some hidden potentials that can be activated. The aim of the article is to explore the possibilities of solving existing problems and to show the possibilities of using the potentials of in-between spaces with regard to the changing nature of a city. The article, of a discursive character, aims to answer the questions of whether connecting a city with public spaces can be a catalyst of changes, and what tools should be used to facilitate the flux of material factors (like goods or natural resources) and immaterial matter (e.g., ideas or cultural patterns). The new approach is based on the assumption that this would be most effective when using landscape architecture, green/blue infrastructure, artistic strategies, and universal design in public spaces. The new approach is based on the assumption that this would be most effective when using landscape architecture, green/blue infrastructure, artistic strategies, and universal design in public spaces. The expected result of the research is to show the purposefulness and possibilities in creating attractive and safe public areas of in-between spaces as an on-going micro- or macro-process of urban change on a wider scale. It was recognised that integrated actions combining the humanistic, ecological, and technical approaches could bring significant benefits to society, preventing existing problems, not only spatial and visual (changing the city directly), but above all social and environmental, having an impact on the functioning of the city from a much longer perspective. The results of the research show how the transformation process of public spaces may change the nature of the cities, improve the compactness of existing cities, and increase the quality of life. Selected case studies are presented to show the scale, scope, and benefits of possible actions.

This is why one of main challenges for urban planners is to connect the fragmented structures by creating friendly, attractive and safe public space. The aim of a paper is to examine the causes and negative effects of city fragmentation and to introduce the possibilities of using Green and Blue Infrastructure when creating public spaces connecting fragmented urban tissue. Properly design public spaces can solve a problem of divided existing urban structures and to overcome spatial, functional and visual barriers.

These problems can be best observed in the areas in-between cities. One of the main questions for urban planners and architects seems thus to be: how to connect the city spaces instead of creating the barriers, how to create the areas “in-between” friendly, safe and attractive? The presented case study, related to the space, architecture and infrastructure between Gdansk and Sopot in Poland, illustrates the issues arising from the wrong spatial planning system and the lack of coherent policy between the neighbouring cities, causing spatial, functional and visual barriers. The article presents some ideas and guidelines helping to solve such problems. The set of integrated mitigation measures such as environmental policy, spatial and urban planning, metropolitan plans, SEA/EIA system and l...

Contemporary solutions should serve future generations and that is why the idea of the resilient city should be discussed and implemented, both in theory and in practice. It is necessary to teach students to design urban structures in such a way that they are resilient to dynamically changing conditions. In this article, the authors have presented a new teaching model based on international co-operation: a joint design studio. In presenting opportunities, the authors have also identified challenges of this new approach based on their experience over three years of co-operation between Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT), in Gdańsk, Poland and Chalmers University of Technology (CUT), in Göteborg, Sweden. This teaching format could be a valuable instrument in the education of future engineers-architects. If properly implemented, it could also be beneficial ...
