This article studies the educational choices that secular and religious professional and manageri... more This article studies the educational choices that secular and religious professional and managerial middle-class parents in Istanbul make for their children. It explores the ways in which class intersects with religion in Turkey where, politics, culture, social, and even economic life are marked by a deep divide among the religious and the secular. Focusing on a particular segment of the middle classes, that with higher economic and social capital, the article brings to fore the ways in which religiosity and secularity structure the processes of transforming privileges into acquired rights in the form of educational qualifications and extracurricular skills. It explores the current sociological conjuncture that bereaves both groups, albeit in different ways, of their ability to fully mobilize their accumulated economic, social, and cultural capitals in reproducing their class position in their children. The article argues that exploring the parenting of education along the secular and the religious divide can unravel the foundational elements of the ongoing competition and conflict in Turkey and enables a deeper understanding of the current divide and the potential for a future reconciliation. The study relies on a qualitative study that entails interviews with thirty families and two focus groups.

Öz Bu makale Elia Kazan'ın ünlü Rıhtımlar Üzerinde adlı sinema filmine içkin ancak bugüne kadar i... more Öz Bu makale Elia Kazan'ın ünlü Rıhtımlar Üzerinde adlı sinema filmine içkin ancak bugüne kadar irdelenmemiş anakronizme odaklanmaktadır. Film Douglas Kellner'ın tanılayıcı eleştiri yaklaşımı ile çözümlenirken, hem İkinci Dünya Savaşı öncesi ve sonrasına dair sosyoekonomik ve tarihsel gelişmeler karşılaştırmalı bir şekilde ele alınacak hem de filmdeki olay örgüsü ve karakterlerin bu tarihsel arka plan içerisinde nasıl bir anakronizmi ortaya koyduğu gösterilecektir. Makalede Kazan'ın savaş sonrası için kurguladığı bir anlatıyı büyük ölçüde 1930'lardaki emek dünyasından hareketle çizdiği iddia edilmekte ve bunun nedenleri tartışılmaktadır. Makalede büyük anakronizm adı verilen bu yapının ilk olarak Kazan'ın kişisel konumunu aklamaya çalışmasına olanak verdiği iddia edilmektedir. Büyük anakronizm ikinci olarak İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında ABD'de hegemonik hale gelen kapitalist büyüme dinamiklerinin işveren/kapitalist lehine bir tablo olarak çizilmesini sağlamaktadır. Son olarak filmin, ABD sinemasında emeğin 1930'lar ve 1950'lerde nasıl görüldüğüne dair biricik bir karşılaştırma olanağı verdiği iddia edilmektedir.

This article is a call for a new research agenda: a socio-economic analysis of coffee in Turkey. ... more This article is a call for a new research agenda: a socio-economic analysis of coffee in Turkey. To contextualize the importance and relevance of this effort, it first provides a critical assessment of the literature on coffee in Turkey by focusing on its two main manifestations: historical and sociological constellations. We show how earlier critical engagement with coffee as a commodity and a research subject helped scholars revise and go beyond the existing scholarship. We then claim a similar transformative prospect exists for political-economic manifestations of coffee today. We justify our claim by suggesting six potential research areas with relevant research questions and potentially enriching outcomes.

İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında çalışma ilişkilerinin asli unsuru olarak kurumsallaşan toplu pazar... more İkinci Dünya Savaşı sonrasında çalışma ilişkilerinin asli unsuru olarak kurumsallaşan toplu pazarlık olgusu kamu iradesinin merkezde olduğu Avrupa'ya göre ABD'de piyasa faktörlerinin daha merkezi role sahip olduğu bir yapıya sahipti. Sosyolog Arne Kalleberg'in işveren merkezli refah dediği bu sistem 1970'lerin çifte petrol krizinden bu yana büyük dönüşüme uğradıysa da 2008 kriziyle birlikte yapısal bir dönüşüme tabi oldu. Bu makale bu yapısal dönüşümün momentlerini üç bölüm halinde ele alıyor. İlk olarak toplu pazarlığın İkinci Dünya Savaşı'ndan 2008'e kadar geçirdiği dönüşüm, ardından 2008 krizinin dönüştürücü etkisi ve son olarak Trump yönetimi ile birlikte şu an içinde bulunduğu durumu sosyal sınıfların tarihsel analizini merkeze koyan bir analiz ile ele alıyorum. Makalenin bu üç adımdan hareketle ana amacı, küresel kapitalizmin en önemli merkezlerinden biri olan ABD'de çalışma ilişkilerinin seyri ve bugün içinde bulunduğu durumu tarihselleştirmektir.
