Lantana Camera and Ocimum sanctum extracts were also found priming against several pests. The present investigation has been done on the effect of Lantana and Ocimum extracts against the fecundity of mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.). The results revealed that both the plant extracts gave better results in comparison of control treatment. Therefore, use of both plant extracts can be incorporated in integrated pest management (IPM) in reducing the reproduction rate of aphids in mustard ecosystem.

Two species each belonged to the order Lepidoptera and Diptera, whereas, Hemiptera shared with one species. All the major parts of this legume plant viz., pod/seed, leaf and stem were found to be infested. Out of five insect species, two recorded as foliage feeders, one as sap suckers, one as pod feeders and one as stem feeder. Leaf miner, Chromatomyia horticola was observed as the major pests on pea. During the course of investigation, three species of natural enemies were found to be associated with insect pest of pea of which Diglyphus sp. was recorded major one.

A Field study was conducted at Pantnagar (India) to determine the effectiveness of seven insectic... more A Field study was conducted at Pantnagar (India) to determine the effectiveness of seven insecticides viz., quinalphos 25 EC, thiamethoxam 25 WG, malathion 50 EC, fenvalerate 20 EC, chlorpyrifos 20 EC, dimethoate 30 EC and imidacloprid 17.8 SL against mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. The observations were recorded at 3, 7 and 10 days after spraying of insecticides. The results revealed that thiamethoxam 25 WG was the most effective among the seven insecticides showing the minimum numbers of L. erysimi Kalt followed by imidacloprid and dimethoate. The maximum seed yield (12.36 q/ha) was obtained from the treatment of imidacloprid which remained on par with the treatments of thiamethoxam (10.0 q/ha) and quinalphos (9.31 q/ha). The lowest seed yield was obtained from untreated plots (6.04 q/ha). So neonicotinoid insecticides (thiamethoxam and imidacloprid) could be used in mustard ecosystem to control mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi with high yield.

The results revealed that the highest mortality (93.33%) of Spodoptera litura was obtained in 5 per cent concentration and at 96 hours exposure in the treatments of Cannabis sativa and Solanum nigrum. The larvae of Athalia proxima lugens was found somewhat susceptible compared to the larvae of Spodoptera litura and highest mortality of 93.33% was obtained in 5 per cent concentration and at 72 hours exposure in the treatments of ageratum conyzoides and Solanum nigrum. Amongst pest complex of about eight species of insects-pests at Pantnagar, U.P., the mustard aphi... more Amongst pest complex of about eight species of insects-pests at Pantnagar, U.P., the mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. has been found to occur continuously in a sizeable population causing a noticeable damage from flowering to maturity stage of the crop, while mustard sawfly, Athalia lugens proxima Klug. and flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae Goeze occurred during seedling stage and painted bug, Bagrada cruciferarum damaged the crop during seedling to maturity stage at a low level of population causing negligible damage. Sporadic occurrence with low population of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, green peach aphid, Myzus persicae and mustard leaf miner, Chromatomyia horticola have been found only on B. carinata. Among them, Myzus persicae was found at vegetative stage whereas Brevicoryne brassicae and Chromatomyia horticola were found at flowering stage. Cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae and diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella were found in irregular occurrence with low abundance. The status of all eight insect-pests on Brassica species was observed as minor with irregular occurrence while L. erysimi as a regular key pest.

Brassica spp. including B. rapa (BSH-1), B. rapa (YST-151), B. carinata (CCN-06-1), B. nigra (PBR-I), B. juncea (Varuna), B. napus (GSC-6) and E. sativa (T-27) were sown on five dates starting from October 3 to December 3, 2016, at fifteen days interval. Early sown crops had significantly lowest numbers of aphids as compared to late sown crops (after 2 nd week of October) which had high numbers of aphids. It is grown on an area of about 6.4 m ha with a production of 8.02 mt and productivity is 1262 kg/ha. In India, Brassica juncea, among Brassica species shares about 90% in area. Even after availability of good production technology mustard crop is unable to give potential yield in the country. This is because Brassica crops suffer heavy loss in yield due to various biotic and abiotic factors. Among the biotic constraints, insect-pests are one of the most important biotic factors in reducing the crop yield. About 50 insect species have been found infesting rapeseed-mustard in India. Out of many insect pests, Lipaphis erysimi is considered important which causes considerable yield losses. The ecological approach to the pest management suggests using pesticides only when and where necessary. Therefore, for ensuring an effective and economical management of this serious pest, the present studies were undertaken for studying its population dynamics of mustard aphid, L. erysimi (Kalt.) on Brassica spp. with respect to sowing dates. These studies will provide an opportunity to face the pest challenge by manipulating sowing time, varietals selection, correct timing of pesticidal application besides other management practices.

The results shows that the highest grub population of mustard sawfly were recorded at 6.00 PM (2.66grubs per m 2) followed by at 6.00 AM (2.35 grubs per m 2), 9.00 AM (2.00 grubs per m 2), 12.00 PM (0.97 grubs per m 2) and lowest at 3.00 PM (0.49 grubs per m 2).Among Brassica species, E. sativa cv. T-27 (0.38 grubs per m 2) and B. rapa cv. YST-151(0.38 grubs per m 2) were more resistant to A. lugensproximawhereasB. nigracv. PBR-I(2.90 grubs per m 2) and B. alba cv. PSB-I(2.75 grubs per m 2) were more susceptible.
A field experiment was conducted during 2017-18 at Pantnagar (India) to evaluate the bio-efficacy... more A field experiment was conducted during 2017-18 at Pantnagar (India) to evaluate the bio-efficacy of Solomon 300 OD (beta-cyfluthrin 9% + imidacloprid 21%) against wheat aphid in comparison to beta-cyfluthrin 25 SC, imidacloprid 200 SL, quinalphos 25 EC and thiamethoxam 25 WG. The treatment of Solomon 300 OD @ 400 ml/ha was found to be the most superior in reducing aphid population with higher grain yield of wheat. At this concentration, it did not show any symptom of phytotoxicity on wheat.
During the period of three consecutive years of investigation on seasonal dynamics of Lipaphis er... more During the period of three consecutive years of investigation on seasonal dynamics of Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), a very irregular pattern of arrival, peak and migration in experimental plots have been observed in different standard weeks at Norman E. Borlaug Crop Research Center, Pantnagar which falls in the Tarai region of Uttarakhand. During 2014-15 mustard aphid first appeared on 52 nd standard week on B. alba remained on it till 10 th standard week on B. carinata. Similarly during 2015-16 and 2016-17, population of L. erysimi was first observed in 49 th ,50 th ,51 st and 52 nd standard week on B. juncea, B. rapa cv. YST-151 and B. rapa cv. BSH-1 and B. napus, respectively. Whereas, it migrated from the field in 7 th , 8 th , 9 th and 12 th standard week from all Brassica species. It was concluded that the aphid arrival, peak and migration trend was not in a definite pattern due to abiotic factors.

It can attain very high densities on young plant tissues, distortion and wilting of young leaves and shoots, reduced growth rate of the plant and causes and subsequently yields loss [5]. green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) cause damage to many host plants directly by sucking the sap and producing necrotic spots in tissues and indirectly by transmitting disease causing organisms and excreting honeydew on which development of sooty mould interfere photosynthesis. The polyphagous insect infesting hundreds of host plants in over 40 plant families including Solanaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Compositae, Cruciferae and Cucurbitaceae. It causes water stress, wilting, reduces growth rate of the plant, honeydew excretion and most important as vector, transmitting more than 100 plant viruses in about 30 families [8] .Knowing the importance of rapeseed-mustard and the damage caused by the M. persicae, this research was carried out to know the occurrence and abundance of green peach aphid on B. carinata with respect to different dates of sowing in Uttarakhand.

The crude aqueous extracts from the leaves of five plants viz., Ageratum conyzoides L., Partheniu... more The crude aqueous extracts from the leaves of five plants viz., Ageratum conyzoides L., Parthenium hysterophorus L., Lantana camera L., Solanum nigrum L. and Cannabis sativa L. were tested for their insecticidal property against larvae of Spodoptera litura (F.) and Athalia proxima lugens (Klug.). The results revealed that the highest mortality (93.33%) of Spodoptera litura was obtained in 5 per cent concentration and at 96 hours exposure in the treatments of Cannabis sativa and Solanum nigrum. The larvae of Athalia proxima lugens was found somewhat susceptible compared to the larvae of Spodoptera litura and highest mortality of 93.33% was obtained in 5 per cent concentration and at 72 hours exposure in the treatments of ageratum conyzoides and Solanum nigrum. Amongst pest complex of about eight species of insects-pests at Pantnagar, U.P., the mustard aphi... more Amongst pest complex of about eight species of insects-pests at Pantnagar, U.P., the mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi Kalt. has been found to occur continuously in a sizeable population causing a noticeable damage from flowering to maturity stage of the crop, while mustard sawfly, Athalia lugens proxima Klug. and flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae Goeze occurred during seedling stage and painted bug, Bagrada cruciferarum damaged the crop during seedling to maturity stage at a low level of population causing negligible damage. Sporadic occurrence with low population of cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae, green peach aphid, Myzus persicae and mustard leaf miner, Chromatomyia horticola have been found only on B. carinata. Among them, Myzus persicae was found at vegetative stage whereas Brevicoryne brassicae and Chromatomyia horticola were found at flowering stage. Cabbage butterfly, Pieris brassicae and diamond back moth, Plutella xylostella were found in irregular occurrence with low abundance. The status of all eight insect-pests on Brassica species was observed as minor with irregular occurrence while L. erysimi as a regular key pest.

Borlaug Centre of G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (India) during Rabi season of 2016-17. Brassica spp. including B. rapa (BSH-1), B. rapa (YST-151), B. carinata (CCN-06-1), B. nigra (PBR-I), B. juncea (Varuna), B. napus (GSC-6) and E. sativa (T-27) were sown on five dates starting from October 3 to December 3, 2016, at fifteen days interval. Early sown crops had significantly lowest numbers of aphids as compared to late sown crops (after 2 nd week of October) which had high numbers of aphids. Introduction Rapeseed-mustard is a major oilseed crop grown in India next to soybean in terms of production and ranked first in terms of oil yield among all oilseed crops sown during the Rabi season in India. It is grown on an area of about 6.4 m ha with a production of 8.02 mt and productivity is 1262 kg/ha. In India, Brassica juncea, among Brassica species shares about 90% in area. Even after availability of good production technology mustard crop is unable to give potential yield in the country. This is because Brassica crops suffer heavy loss in yield due to various biotic and abiotic factors. Among the biotic constraints, insect-pests are one of the most important biotic factors in reducing the crop yield. About 50 insect species have been found infesting rapeseed-mustard in India. Out of many insect pests, Lipaphis erysimi is considered important which causes considerable yield losses. The ecological approach to the pest management suggests using pesticides only when and where necessary. Therefore, for ensuring an effective and economical management of this serious pest, the present studies were undertaken for studying its population dynamics of mustard aphid, L. erysimi (Kalt.) on Brassica spp. with respect to sowing dates. These studies will provide an opportunity to face the pest challenge by manipulating sowing time, varietals selection, correct timing of pesticidal application besides other management practices.

Borlaug Crop Research Centre (NEBCRC) of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (India) during Rabiseason of 2015-16. The results shows that the highest grub population of mustard sawfly were recorded at 6.00 PM (2.66grubs per m 2) followed by at 6.00 AM (2.35 grubs per m 2), 9.00 AM (2.00 grubs per m 2), 12.00 PM (0.97 grubs per m 2) and lowest at 3.00 PM (0.49 grubs per m 2).Among Brassica species, E. sativa cv. T-27 (0.38 grubs per m 2) and B. rapa cv. YST-151(0.38 grubs per m 2) were more resistant to A. lugensproximawhereasB. nigracv. PBR-I(2.90 grubs per m 2) and B. alba cv. PSB-I(2.75 grubs per m 2) were more susceptible.
A field experiment was conducted during 2017-18 at Pantnagar (India) to evaluate the bio-efficacy... more A field experiment was conducted during 2017-18 at Pantnagar (India) to evaluate the bio-efficacy of Solomon 300 OD (beta-cyfluthrin 9% + imidacloprid 21%) against wheat aphid in comparison to beta-cyfluthrin 25 SC, imidacloprid 200 SL, quinalphos 25 EC and thiamethoxam 25 WG. The treatment of Solomon 300 OD @ 400 ml/ha was found to be the most superior in reducing aphid population with higher grain yield of wheat. At this concentration, it did not show any symptom of phytotoxicity on wheat.
During the period of three consecutive years of investigation on seasonal dynamics of Lipaphis er... more During the period of three consecutive years of investigation on seasonal dynamics of Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), a very irregular pattern of arrival, peak and migration in experimental plots have been observed in different standard weeks at Norman E. Borlaug Crop Research Center, Pantnagar which falls in the Tarai region of Uttarakhand. During 2014-15 mustard aphid first appeared on 52 nd standard week on B. alba remained on it till 10 th standard week on B. carinata. Similarly during 2015-16 and 2016-17, population of L. erysimi was first observed in 49 th ,50 th ,51 st and 52 nd standard week on B. juncea, B. rapa cv. YST-151 and B. rapa cv. BSH-1 and B. napus, respectively. Whereas, it migrated from the field in 7 th , 8 th , 9 th and 12 th standard week from all Brassica species. It was concluded that the aphid arrival, peak and migration trend was not in a definite pattern due to abiotic factors.

Therefore, model based on weather parameters and population dynamics can provide reliable forecast of insect pests attack so that suitable plant protection measures could be taken timely to protect the crops. Keeping this in view, present study was undertaken to develop and validate weather based forewarning model for the Tarai region of Uttarakhand, India.

B. carinata was sown on five dates of sowing starting from October 3 to December 3, 2015 and 2016 at fifteen days interval. The population of Myzus persicae recorded on b. carinata in present study differ significantly with respect to different dates of sowing in both the years. regarding the date of sowing, overall mean population of green peach aphid was found the maximum in second(134.8 per 3 leaves) and fifth(114.2 per leaves)date of sowing while minimum in fourth(77.6 per leaves) date of sowing during both the seasons. however, the green peach aphid population was found higher during Rabi 2015-16 compared than 2016-17. Out of which, green peach aphid Myzus persicae (Sulzer) inflicts major losses to the rapeseed crop, it sucks on the phloem of different plant parts including inflorescence and seed pods resulting in substantial yield. It can attain very high densities on young plant tissues, distortion and wilting of young leaves and shoots, reduced growth rate of the plant and causes and subsequently yields loss [5]. green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) cause damage to many host plants directly by sucking the sap and producing necrotic spots in tissues and indirectly by transmitting disease causing organisms and excreting honeydew on which development of sooty mould interfere photosynthesis. The polyphagous insect infesting hundreds of host plants in over 40 plant families including Solanaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Compositae, Cruciferae and Cucurbitaceae. It causes water stress, wilting, reduces growth rate of the plant, honeydew excretion and most important as vector, transmitting more than 100 plant viruses in about 30 families [8] .Knowing the importance of rapeseed-mustard and the damage caused by the M. persicae, this research was carried out to know the occurrence and abundance of green peach aphid on B. carinata with respect to different dates of sowing in Uttarakhand.
