In vitro biological activities including bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal activities as ... more In vitro biological activities including bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal activities as well as phytotoxicity and brine shrimp toxicity of the petroleum ether, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of Iris germanica L. were determined. The bactericidal activity of the extracts was assayed by the agar well diffusion test. In the fungicidal test, the agar tube dilution method was used. The insecticidal activity was determined by the exposure method. The toxicity of the extracts was evaluated by the phytotoxicity test as well as the brine shrimp toxicity test. The chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts of I. germanica rhizomes exhibited bactericidal activity, while the petroleum ether extract did not exhibit any bactericidal, fungicidal and insecticidal activities. It was also inactive in the brine shrimp toxicity test, whereas it showed significant phytotoxicity against the plant Lemna aequinoctialis Welv. Two known isoflavones were isolated from the chloroform extract of the plant.

The antinociceptive effects of ethanolic extracts of Pancratium maritimum L., Narcissus tazetta s... more The antinociceptive effects of ethanolic extracts of Pancratium maritimum L., Narcissus tazetta subspecies tazetta and Leucojum aestivum L. bulbs have been investigated in mice using the p-benzoquinone-induced abdominal constriction and hot-plate tests. In the p-benzoquinone-induced abdominal constriction test the ethanolic extracts of P. maritimum (300, 600 or 1200 mg kg-1, s.c.) and N. tazetta subsp. tazetta (5, 50, 100 or 200 mg kg-1, s.c.) caused dose-dependent inhibition of abdominal constrictions whereas a fluctuating response was obtained from ethanolic extracts of L aestivum (2.5-500 mg kg-1, s.c.). In the hot-plate test P. maritimum and L. aestivum caused a significant increase of latency only at the highest concentrations used (1200 mg kg-1 and 500 mg kg-1, i.p., respectively). However, at these concentrations they also caused significant toxic effects. In contrast with P. maritimum and L. aestivum, N. tazetta subsp. tazetta (5-500 mg kg-1, i.p.) extracts had no antinociceptive effect in this test. These findings indicate that the antinociceptive effect of Amaryllidaceae plants differs depending on the model of nociception investigated.

The compound crystallizes in the space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 with cell dimensions a = 6.040(1), b = 12.382(1), c = 17.861(2) A, with Z = 4. The molecule has five rings and an OH group. The N-containing, five-membered ring and the D ring have envelope conformations. The A and B rings have distorted chair and half-chair conformations, respectively.

However, the pathogenesis of AD is still not clearly known. Current research in drug discovery for treatment of AD involves various targets, being only symptomatic, with the main therapeutic strategies based on "cholinergic hypothesis" and "amyloid cascade hypothesis". During the last decade, inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) such as tacrine (Cognex ® ), donepezil (Aricept ® ), rivastigmine (Exelon ® ), and galanthamine (Reminyl ® ) have been launched. More recently, memantine (Ebixa ® ) has been emerged on the market as an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, which has been approved to be effective in the treatment of moderate to severe type of AD. In this review, we will focus on recent status of drug molecules for treatment of AD, currently either that in clinical practice, or still in clinical trials.

Their structures were elucidated by using NMR spectroscopic methods. All of the compounds exhibited moderate to weak acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase and glutathione S-transferase inhibitory activities. Compounds 1-19 also exhibited modest anti-fungal activities against Candidaalbicans. Compounds 1, 2, 8, 9 and 18 also exhibited weak anti-leishmanial activity.
