Thirty pregnant women with GDM and 30 gestational age matched healthy pregnant subjects participated to the study. Maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 and apelin-36 levels were measured with ELISA, at the time of birth. The relationships between maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 and apelin-36 levels, anthropometric and metabolic parameters were also assessed. Maternal serum apelin-36 levels were found higher (13.5 ± 8.3 vs. 9.6 ± 5.9 ng/ml, P = 0.001) and nesfatin-1 levels were found lower (5.5 ± 8.1 vs. 8.1 ± 23.9 ng/ml, P = 0.001) in patients with GDM compared with control pregnant women. However, the cord blood apelin-36 levels (8.8 ± 4.3 and 8.2 ± 1.9 ng/ml, P = 0.618) and nesfatin-1 levels (5.4 ± 4.0 and 6.2 ± 10.3 ng/ml, P = 0.688) were similar in the GDM and control groups, respectively. Maternal serum apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels correlated positively with their respective cord blood levels. Maternal serum and cord blood apelin-36 levels correlated negatively with the gestational age and birth weight. Similarly maternal serum and cord blood nesfatin-1 levels correlated negatively with the gestational age, but there was no correlation with the birth weight. We did not find a correlation between maternal serum apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels, maternal age, BMI, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, and HOMA-IR. Also cord blood apelin-36 and nesfatin-1 levels did not correlate with the maternal age, BMI, HOMA-IR, cord blood glucose, and cord blood insulin levels. Our results indicate that apelin-36 concentrations increase and nesfatin-1 concentrations decrease in maternal serum of women with GDM.

However, the relationship between infectious disease and SIADH is not yet fully known. In this prospective study, we aimed to assess the presence of SIADH in patients with brucellosis. Thirty-five patients with acute brucellosis were retrospectively reviewed. The diagnosis of brucellosis was performed using the Wright test in connection with blood culture. SIADH was defined by euvolemic hyponatremia (serum sodium level lower than 135 mEq/l) with increased urinary sodium excretion (urinary sodium higher than 40 mmol/l). Of the 35 patients, 19 (54%) had SIADH; 20 (57%) also had hypouricemia (uric acid level lower than 4 mg/dl). Additionally, all of the studied patients had a high mean urinary sodium excretion rate (mean 132 mmol/l; range 40-224). Most importantly, the hyponatremic patients were more likely to have a lower albumin level (P < 0.01). SIADH is a...

Research conducted in this study is oriented on a data of both qualitative and quantitative results obtained from 95 samples at Hafiz Ali Korca Boarding High School in Kavaje, Albania. The results of the collected data indicate that school belonging is a gradually evolving sense through students of first year to the students of last year at this specific boarding school. The study also shows that there is a strong correlation between school attachment and family, teachers, peers and facilities of the school. Data is collected through questionnaires, and two case studies which are implemented through quasi-experiment. The students chosen for case studies are of two specific problems; a) a student that had difficulties in overcoming with language barriers due to his regional background as he had to get used to a new school setting far from his family, b) a student that has to stay at school dormitory while he had his home within city, thus suffered from loneliness, and find it difficult to relate himself with school at the very beginning.

On the other hand, in today`s world individuals are suffering from not only material crisis but also spiritual crisis that are having impacts on identity. The moments of crisis are desperate times that may require desperate measures; however such unwary steps may cause problems on identity, spirit, and self as resulting in crisis on important components of an individual. In order to avoid setbacks and inauspiciousness, faith or beliefs in a divine power are to be studied with their problem solving aspects in moments of crisis. Our perception of psychology and the way we use it in dealing with crisis of different types through generating positive psychology is delved as to understand the new course of psychology in this regard. This study together with literature written on the subject aims to investigate the correlation between crisis and well-being of individuals and their identities as well as the impact of religion on identity in solving personality problems.

A total of 43 pediatric patients (age 7-16 years) who had undergone type 1 tympanoplasty with the diagnosis of chronic otitis media between March 2010 and March 2013 were included in this retrospective study. The main outcome measures were the graft success rate and level of hearing improvement. Graft intake success rate was 90.7%. Mean preoperative and postoperative air-bone gap values were 20.51±4.34dB SPL and 9.32±5.64dB SPL, respectively (p<0.001). Mean preoperative and postoperative pure tone average values were 28.6±3.52 and 12.24±5.22 respectively (p<0.001). Air-bone gap was improved to ≤10dB in 38 (88.37%) patients during the postoperative period. Boomerang-shaped chondroperichondrial grafting technique seems to be a successful alternative in the management of pediatric chronic otitis media cases. It has relatively higher grade graft success rate.

In most cases of diabetic csytopathy, autonomic involvement is responsible, which develops insidiously over a long time. We investigated the hand and genital sympathetic skin responses (SSRs) and its relation to urodynamic abnormalities in this group of patients. Methods: We performed hand and genital SSRs in 24 children with Type-1 DM, whose hemoglobin A1C values were above normal limits. We also recruited 19 healthy children for SSRs measurements. Cystometry was performed in 24 children with Type-1 DM. Based on cystometry ¢ndings, these children were classi¢ed into two groups as normal (n:6) and abnormal (n:18). The amplitude and latency of hand and genital SSRs of 24 children with Type-1 DM and 19 healthy children were compared. Results: Hand and genital SSRs were obtained from all of the diabetic and healthy children. The mean genital SSRs amplitude in diabetic children was signi¢cantly lower than the controls. There was no di¡erence in the mean values of all investigated parameters between the normal group and controls. When compared to the controls, there was prolonged latency and decreased amplitude of genital SSRs and decreased hand SSRs amplitude in abnormal group. Conclusions: SSR is a noninvasive test for the evaluation of autonomic sympathetic involvement. Our study revealed di¡erences in genital SSR before the manifestations of cystopathy. Children with abnormal urodynamic ¢ndings had changes in both hand and genital SSRs. These ¢ndings suggest that SSR tests may have a place in the evaluation of diabetic cystopathy in the early asymptomatic period. Neurourol. Urodynam. 25: 243^248,
The metabolite changes in the brains of children with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus ... more The metabolite changes in the brains of children with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM) were investigated by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). A total of 30 subjects and 14 age-matched healthy volunteers underwent single-voxel MRS (TE: 136). The duration of disease, medication, presence of hypoglycaemia episodes and the level of haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) in the patients were noted. Voxels were placed in the pons, left basal ganglion (LBG) and left posterior parietal white matter (PPWM). N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/creatinine (Cr) and choline (Cho)/Cr ratios were calculated. The average HbA1c level was 11.9 +/- 3.4 (8.2-19.4). The average number of keto-acidosis episodes was 1.9 +/- 2.2 (0-9) and the average number of daily insulin injections was 2.8 +/- 0.97 (2-4). MRS revealed lower NAA/Cr and Cho/Cr ratios in the pons and lower NAA/Cr ratio in the PPWM of patients with DM than in control subjects. No significant correlation was observed between the number of hypoglycaemia episodes and metabolite ratios. Metabolic abnormalities have been observed by MRS in the brain of poorly controlled type 1 DM children. These metabolic changes, in particular in the pons region, include a decrease in NAA, indicating neuronal loss or functional impairment, and likely explanations for a decrease in Cho may be dynamic changes in membrane lipids and/or decreased membrane turnover.

In 17 patients with parenchymal lesions, 61 focal lesions were detected by MRI. MRS was performed from normal appearing frontal and posterior parietal white matter (FWM and PWM) in NF1 and from control groups. NAA/Cr, Cho/Cr and MI/Cr ratios were calculated. Significant increase in Cho/Cr and MI/Cr ratios were found in FWM and PWM in MR negative and positive groups when compared to control group. NAA/Cr ratio in MR positive group was significantly decreased in FWM compared to control group. There were no significant differences between FWM and PWM in all metabolite ratios of MR negative group. MI/Cr ratio in MR positive group was significantly elevated in PWM compared to FWM. Metabolite changes detected by MRS could indicate demyelination and gliosis in normal appearing white matter in all NF1 patients, and additionally neuroaxonal damage in the FWM of NF1 patients with focal lesions. For that reason, in the clinical evaluation and follow-up of these patients MRS features of normal appearing white matter should be considered in addition to focal lesions.

A total of 49 male subjects and 30 age-matched healthy volunteers underwent detailed neurological and psychiatric examinations. All subjects had long-echo [repetition time (TR) 2000 ms, echo time (TE) 136 ms] single-voxel MR spectroscopy. Voxels (15 ϫ 15 ϫ 15 mm 3 ) were placed in the parietal white matter, thalamus, and basal ganglia. N-acetylaspartate (NAA)/creatine (Cr) and choline (Cho)/Cr ratios were calculated. There was no significant difference between the study subjects and the control group in NAA/Cr ratios obtained from thalamus, basal ganglia, and parietal white matter. Cho/Cr ratios in thalamus, basal ganglia, and parietal white matter were found to be significantly increased compared to controls. There was a positive correlation between basal ganglia Cho/Cr ratio and duration of exposure (r ϭ 0.63). MR spectroscopy should be performed to reveal metabolite changes and determine the degree of brain involvement in solvent-related industry workers.

They are originated from smooth muscle cells of the uterus and/or sometimes of the uterine vessels. Intravascular lipoleiomyomatosis is a very rare form of leiomyomas which grow within veins and can extend up to vena cava inferior and right heart chamber with cardiac symptoms and is diagnosed by cardiovascular surgeons. We report a case of incidental intravascular lipoleiomyomatosis which was confined to the uterus being diagnosed after a total abdominal hysterectomy by pathology and its management strategy.
