Today is the Tomorrow You Worried About Yesterday (a saying by my Nan)

Active April: Commit to It
Grandpa

Yesterday ended up being enjoyable; eating out at lunchtime, and then pub after work, with a very big crowd, finishing with a game of pool. I'll be out later with friends watching the East Anglia Derby (Norwich v Ipswich) and then some more pool afterwards. I attempted to give a delivery driver directions to Sainsburys on my way to the station.

I'm trying to set myself an exercise goal, and have realised the one thing that has been lapsing lately is my commitment to indoor fitness routines at home, which I frequently just find myself not having the time for, or not feeling like doing. I found these quite handy during the coronavirus lockdowns for keeping my fitness, so today I am going to try and discipline myself more to do these at least once a week, 10-20 minutes per session, no cutting short workouts because of the "busyness trap".

On Strava, I have completed the April Ten Days Active Challenge. I have walked 64.3K steps for the April Walk 100K Steps Challenge, and have climbed 775m for the April Elevation Challenge and 82 feet for the HOKA Speedgoat 7 Vert Challenge (due to a watch SNAFU, I barely recorded any elevation gain yesterday).

I've been wondering how I can make others laugh today; it seems that:
1) I only make people laugh by accident; and
2) I was too busy today to think of any jokes on purpose.

Point in fact, this morning I made someone laugh on the e-mail (well, respond with a laughing emoji on the messenger app) when I mentioned plans to play pool at the weekend, but typed by accident that I was "playing pooo", before hastily correcting my mistake.

52 ways to walk has a chapter about walking alone, and that's what much of my walking has involved just now, with commutes, and today site visits in the sweltering heat, which took up most of my day, but I did get to spot things I don't normally notice, like this artwork.

8 April 2026.jpg

Australian-born Clara Vyvyan, as the book sets out, used to walk long distances alone, and Jack Fong also states that it allows us to "confront who we are". Sometimes I like having someone for company on a walk, but solitude can be good too, although busy city streets like today aren't usually the best environment for it, especially when you have to watch out for kids who are in a world of their own (because its school holidays), and with parents who don't seem to notice the kid practically running into other pedestrians.

On Strava, I have:
* Logged 8 of 10 days for the April Ten Days Active Challenge;
* Climbed 721m for the April Elevation Challenge; and
* Walked 49.2K steps for the April 100K Steps Challenge.

Tomorrow, I start a new challenge: HOKA Speedgoat 7 Vert Challenge, which is a climbing challenge with a goal of 7,000 feet.

Happier January: Let's Get Together

Some friends of mine are organising meetups for next month already; looks like we'll have a pub trip one evening, and a pool evening the evening after. I sent a couple of texts to friends telling them of the dates this morning, but didn't hear anything back. I've been a bit more successful in organising lunch with friends at work in a few weeks' time.

I spent the morning doing some mandatory learning, all about radicalisation; it made me realise how much extremists can target young people who are a little insecure or isolated, and brainwash them with their own ideologies. I chatted to the men who are finally repairing the lift where I live (after a long time) earlier, and visited the dentist. I should have asked why some of my teeth get extra sensitive to eating food; I'll have to see if the issue persists.

I watched episode 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms last night; I wonder how much will be based on the short story The Hedge Knight that George R.R. Martin wrote back in the 90s about Dunk and Egg, and how much will be based on any other stories he wrote about them. I re-read it in Robert Silverberg's Legends compilation.

November — “Silence”

I remember having a lot of plans for November, and not a lot of quiet moments (the first day involved a walk and pool session). I'll try and cherish the moments when I wasn't doing too much stuff, like waiting at a friend's house while waiting for him to have his shower before we headed out again. I'm always tempted to get my phone out and seek a distraction, but maybe I'll try to live in the moment a bit more.

As for November 2026, I'd like it to be a bit more thoughtful, more meditative, as I approach the busiest time of year (Christmas).

An almost empty Underground train feels representative of the November silence, taken as I approached Cockfosters on the Piccadilly Line.

October — “Warmth Inside”

October went well, as I had a bunch of plans for this month before it even started. Most significantly, I attended a wedding, but also I had evenings out with friends, including one birthday party, and finished it with a pool session. Just the occasional one to one chat with a friend made this month a bit warmer, even if we'd just gone outside into the cold just for a break (I had a really good chat with a friend just outside the wedding reception).

I'd like next October to be a warm one; hopefully the days won't turn cold too soon.

I think this picture sums up the inner warmth of October; selfie taken in a pub. I was on my own this time, but both times I went, I managed to have chats with locals at the bar. One of them told me about how he's getting married next year.

May — “The Taste of Life”
Liverpool

May 2025 was good; it helped that I was able to go out in the evening, have walks, and spend time with friends, mostly through trips to play pool, sing karaoke, and even visit the theatre. I wasn't just sitting in front of the TV acting like a couch potato.

I very much expect to have an adventurous May 2026, because of some plans that I have at the start of the month.

Okay, so this isn't a picture of me, but this picture feels like it represents the mood of May 2025; quite chilled out, not overly busy, just having fun. That dude Aaron, and I do follow him on Instagram.

February — “Warmth Amid the Cold”

Turned out all right really, one social postponed by a friend, and I was forced to cancel attending another one. The fact that I made a bunch of plans with friends that I was able to stick to helped, particularly Taskmaster, and the pool session that we had at the end of the month.

There was also the surprise birthday cake at church.

As for next February, I'd definitely like it to be warmer; the warmer the better.

This looks like one I took while out hiking at the start of the month.

New Ways November: Unfamiliar Yet Comforting

Today is the start of New Ways November, and for once I can't think of any new things that I can fit into this month. Maybe a walk recce for stags in a place I'm not familiar with, a few new bands, visiting a friend's church for the first time, and also a new pool hall to try tonight.

My new Strava challenges are:
* November Walk 50K Challenge;
* November Elevation Challenge (2,000m as usual)
* November Ten Days Active Challenge;
* November 5K x Brooks Challenge; and
* November 400-Minute x Runna Challenge.

Finally, photo_scavenger is updated, with two prompts: blanket and mug.

Optimistic October: New Week, New Goals

I reminded people to check whether their area is in an area of flood risk; I should probably do that myself.

Dad enjoyed last night with the Spurs legends: Graham Roberts hosting, with Ledley King and Ossie Ardiles; I good-humoured evening, but I still didn't want to let on that I'm a Liverpool fan. It's scary in a room full of fans of another team.

I'm setting myself goals for next week:
1) Make progress on that Stags AGM report;
2) Check Pool is still going ahead on Hallowe'en;
3) Book my next food delivery;
4) Chase up my GIS colleagues regarding the cultural dataset and making it public;
5) Edit the next few chapters of the book I'm writing;
6) Get back to writing my current X-Files fan fiction, which I shelved what feels like ages ago;
7) Finish Squid Game (one episode to go);
8) Invite the guys to badminton next Saturday, assuming it is going ahead; and
9) Set up a Prayermate list for the prayer triplet.

On Strava, I have climbed 689m for the October Elevation Challenge. I also start a new challenge today: Keep Your Cool: Eight Sleep Challenge; this requires 1 hour and 40 minutes of activity.

Morning walk in the Lake District while on holiday. We were staying at Center Parcs, and went back there in the afternoon and played some pool.
