For this study, we demonstrate another potential benefit: the ability to control the timing of ignition with short, nanosecond pulses, thereby optimizing the type of mixture that burns in rapidly changing, stratified fuel-air mixtures.

The soot samples were taken at different axial locations in the spray flame, 40, 50 and 70 mm from injector nozzle, which correspond to soot formation, peak, and oxidation zones, respectively.

The soot samples were taken at 50mm from the injector nozzle, which corresponds to the peak soot location in the spray flames.

However, one of the main challenges with this type of operation in diesel engines is that it can be difficult to control the combustion phasing, especially at high loads.

Typical exhaust measurements from engines running biodiesel indicate that particulate matter, carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons are decreased, whereas nitrogen oxide emissions tend to be increased.

However, the most widely used light-scatter measurement techniques are not fully quantitative. Without a strict quantification of the liquid distribution, the measurement technique selected and/or the details of the experimental setup may significantly influence the reported liquid penetration.

An integrated optimization methodology is presented that combines the use of a multi-objective genetic algorithm optimization tool and a non-parametric regression analysis tool in order to maximize understanding of piston bowl design for use in low-temperature diesel combustion. This methodology is specifically applied to a late injection, Modulated Kinetics (MK) type combustion in order to gain insight about the effect of bowl design under this type of operating condition.

Abstract Low-temperature combustion (LTC) strategies for diesel engines are of increasing interes... more Abstract Low-temperature combustion (LTC) strategies for diesel engines are of increasing interest because of their potential to significantly reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. LTC with late fuel injection further offers the benefit of combustion phasing control because ignition is closely coupled to the fuel injection event. But with a short ignition-delay, fuel jet mixing processes must be rapid to achieve adequate premixing before ignition. In the current study, mixing and pollutant formation of late-injection LTC ...

Three common spray-targeting strategies are examined: conventional piston-bowl-wall targeting (152 included angle); narrow-angle floor targeting (124 included angle); and wide-angle piston-bowl-lip targeting (160 included angle). Planar laser-induced fluorescence ...

Abstract Low temperature combustion (LTC) strategies, which can mitigate emissions of particulate... more Abstract Low temperature combustion (LTC) strategies, which can mitigate emissions of particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxides (NO x) from diesel engines, typically have longer ignition delays compared to conventional diesel operation. With extended ignition delays, more time is available for premixing, which reduces PM formation. The effect of varying ignition delay on the spatial and temporal evolution of soot in LTC diesel jets is studied by imaging the natural soot luminosity, while the in-cylinder soot mass and temperature are ...

Abstract The fuel-ambient mixture in vaporized fuel jets produced by liquid sprays is fundamental... more Abstract The fuel-ambient mixture in vaporized fuel jets produced by liquid sprays is fundamental to the performance and operation of engines. Unfortunately, experimental difficulties limit the direct measurement of local fuel-ambient mixture, inhibiting quantitative assessment of mixing. On the other hand, measurement of global quantities, such as the jet penetration rate, is relatively straightforward. Simplified models to predict local fuel-ambient mixture have also been developed, based on these global parameters. However, ...
