First announced back at Unite 2024, Unity 7 (technically Unity Next Generation) was an ambitious project to clean up many of the flaws and tech debt that Unity has accrued over the years. This included a consolidation of render pipelines, a move to CoreCLR, DOTS/ECS built into the core and much more. Since then, a lot has changed at Unity, including hiring a completely new CEO, which of course is going to result in a change in direction at the company. This year at Unite 2025 in Barcelona, in addition to the major announcement of a partnership between Unity and Epic Games, perhaps the biggest news was a complete lack of news.
There wasn’t a single mention of Unity Next Generation (Unity 7). In fact, the Unity Developer Roadmap made one thing crystal clear… Unity 7 is dead. The vast majority of new features announced for Unity 7 are now going to appear in upcoming Unity 6.x features. Sadly a few announced features like Word Building and the new Animation tools have been shelved.
We discuss what Unity 7 was going to be all about, why it was killed and what this means going forward in the video below.
