0001 - "You're acting like an asshole so I don't want to talk to you" is not an example of the tone argument. The tone argument, roughly, claims that angry/upset/emotional people are outright wrong (or at least that their arguments are undeserving of consideration) merely because they're angry/upset/emotional. It's a stupid argument because 2+2 = 4 whether it is said calmly with a smile or if it's roared whilst brandishing a very big stick. However, not wanting to talk to someone with a big stick (or equivalent) is not by itself an indicator of dismissing their argument (unless you actually say that). "I don't have to listen to you" is not equivalent to "I don't want to talk to you".

0010 - Corollary: Being an asshole doesn't make one wrong, but one can be right and still be an asshole. If the focus is on fact and not conduct, there is no difference between being right nicely and being right rudely. Also, if you routinely choose to focus on conduct before you consider any facts, you will hopefully excuse me for backing away from you slowly while watching for any sudden movements. :D

0011 - I have been rewatching Babylon 5 at an accelerated pace due to having upped my daily exercise to 120 minutes from 40, and I can unequivocally say that Commander Susan Ivanova is one of the greatest characters OF ALL TIME. I had watched the series while it was still airing, and then my attention was stolen away by other shiny fandoms, but the rewatch reminded me that on the very short list of "characters I wish were real people", Ivanova is right up there with Ichigo from Bleach and Ellen Ripley from Aliens.

0100 - Ascension is going to be biweekly from now on instead of weekly. Spring has crept up on me; I have cosplays to work on, other things to write, and an epic trip to plan. The current chapter poll will stay open until this coming Monday, and the next chapter will be posted on the following Monday (March 21).

About the whole "I wish you wouldn't" vs "You shouldn't" question from yesterday's poll -- I was really curious what people thought, because to me the "words only, no context" distinction was always a very clear one, but I was talking to a friend who felt that "I wish you wouldn't" is equivalent to "shouldn't" and both are basically telling someone what to do. I disagreed with her, so I asked the internet. :D

You know what would be awesome? A (live) dramatic reading of The Matrix transcript where each reader is limited to 140 (digital) characters (or fewer) at a time, speaking in full sentences as much as possible. Even if it means that more than one person speaks for the same character. Lils and I have been trying this on Twitter and it IS AWESOME LIKE THIS CAT. You're welcome.

You know what's not so awesome? Not knowing when it's appropriate to say "X and I" vs "X and me". No, the rule is not "cultured people say 'X and I', they never say 'X and me'." That's just something clueless people say because they don't know from noun cases.

I would be really annoyed if this were a troll, because of how upset it makes me -- nobody wants to be told that they were/are upset for no real reason, especially when the upsetting thing is personally hurtful. Like, I read one article about this, and it cited some lady saying "I'm a heterosexual adult female and I'm very upset by this" and I was like, "o.O;; no, really? Try being GLBT, cupcake." Then I realised that "I'm heterosexual" is not meant to be offensive in this context, but is instead supposed to carry extra weight, as in, "look, you didn't just upset the gays! You also upset the heterosexuals!" And the fact that this is supposed to somehow make the argument more potent? It hurts. I don't know how else to say it.

And if the reason behind all this is an epic troll, it would cheapen, if not all-out invalidate, the anger and hurt. So I can definitely understand not wanting to believe it wasn't corporate shenanigans but rather the actions of a bored 20something white male with aspirations to hackerdom. But not wanting to believe something and refusing to believe it are different things. In general, I am so very tired of constantly redefining where I draw the line in believing things I read on the Internet. *grump*

0001 - The red hair experiment from yesterday was a success! Well, not totally -- it didn't take well on the still-black parts of my hair (I had hoped it would because it's been forever since I last coloured, and it had faded quite a bit already). But I really like the shade I chose (this, though the model's hair is a lot more purple than the sample swatch, and my hair is definitely red, not purple :D). So I'll get it professionally coloured in a couple of months. :D

0010 - The Exercise Regimen for Lazy People was also a success! In that I am up to 30+ minutes a day on the bike, and it's definitely a part of my daily routine now (I don't feel right without it). *\o/* I'm going to keep increasing the time until I hit 40 minutes, so I can watch 1 episode of BSG in full while spinning! When I run out of BSG to watch, I've decided to watch CSI:NY and Criminal Minds. I've been catching both because they're usually on right after Wednesday's AI, and I really like them. If my calculations are correct, BSG + catching up on those should take me most of the way through the summer.

0010 - Finished Avatar yesterday and it was awesome. Iroh and Toph are my favourites, followed closely by Katara, Sokka, and Aang. I didn't mind Zuko in Book 3; for most of the series, though, he annoyed me kind of a lot. >.> Also, Zuko/Mai is the cutest emogoth pairing EVER.

0011 - Going to continue watching BSG -- I started last year and watched the first 3 episodes but never went back for some reason.

0101 - I can't figure out what it is that makes me *creatively* fannish about a series. Like, I want to read and write stuff in HP, Bleach, and Reborn -- HP's got a fascinating plot and world, Bleach has incredible characters and an amazing world, and in Reborn, I'm completely in love with a pairing. OTOH, I love FMA, but inclination to read or write fic? Zero. Same with Avatar and Skip Beat and Wheel of Time and ASOIAF and the Dark Tower and Lord of the Rings. And all of these offer characters, plotlines, and settings that are by no means inferior to my "main" fandoms' source material. But I just don't feel them the same way. I seriously wonder why!

0010 - Exercise: I'm up to 21 minutes today, and I've recovered from last week's bout with the plague, so I'm back up to 20 km/h. It's actually becoming a lot easier, and I think once I hit 30 minutes, I'll start increasing the speed and resistance. I am now certain that I'm sleeping better due to the exercise; a week-long period of improved sleep might've been a fluke, but I'm hard-pressed to say the same about a month. I am smoking less -- not through any conscious effort to cut down, but I just don't crave it as much. My stress-related upper back pain is gone. I can run up the two flights of stairs to my office without getting winded. My balance and posture are improving. And the most interesting thing is ( unfortunately girly TMICollapse )

0100 - Music: Today I discovered that it's been so long since I've bothered to try learning anything two-handed that I have completely forgotten how to read notes on the bass clef. D: D: This was extremely upsetting for me and I'm going to set aside a half hour every day to practice. I was trying to play the Namimori school anthem. *facepalm* I know, I know. Just. I THINK I MAY BE FALLING FOR D18 A LITTLE BIT. I READ A REALLY GOOD FIC THE OTHER DAY AND THEN LAST WEEK'S CHAPTER HAPPENED AND AND AND...

0101 - Seasons: It's spring, and I'm happy. I don't want to hear about equinoxes -- in my world, spring always starts on March 1st. Always has, always will. >.> Spring means time for spring cleaning of all kinds. I'm looking forward to it.
