What does PMSM mean?

Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) is a kind of synchronous motor in which a permanent magnet is used as a rotor to create field poles. It has a permanent magnet rotor and windings on the stator. The stator is an unmovable part, and the rotor is a movable part of the synchronous motor. The permanent magnets embedded in the rotor create a constant magnetic field and the stator windings are connected to an Alternating Current (AC) supply to produce a rotating magnetic field.
PMSM is typically used for high-performance and high-efficiency motor drives characterized by smooth rotation over the entire speed range of the motor, full torque at zero speed, and fast acceleration. Neodymium magnets are the most commonly used magnets in these motors.

Note:
A synchronous motor is an AC motor where the rotation of the rotor (shaft) is synchronized with the frequency of the supply current. That is, the rotation period of the rotor is equal to the rotating magnetic field of the machine. The speed of rotation of the rotor is identical to the synchronous speed.
Synchronous speed is the rotational speed of the magnetic field provided at the stator of the motor.
