What does HEVC mean?

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard that offers a number of enhancements over Advanced Video Coding (AVC). It is one of the most widely used formats for the recording, compression, and distribution of video content online.
HEVC provides better video compression and quality compared to AVC.
HEVC compression is about 50% more efficient than AVC, which means maintaining the same video quality at half the bitrate or double the video quality at the same bitrate, and reducing storage by half when compared to AVC.

Note:
AVC, also known as H.264, is a video compression standard.
