명승, 고적, 천연 기념물 편람: a North Korean Guide
to Famous Places, Historical Relics and Natural Monuments
The Guide to Famous Places, Historical Relics and Natural
Monuments (Myŏngsŭng, kojŏk, ch‘ŏnyŏn kinyŏmmul p‘yŏllam),
published in 1966, is the most comprehensive survey of North
Korean cultural heritage and a fundamental document, describing
relics and monuments located within the territory of the
reclusive state. This book is the last available source that documents
in detail the immovable historical heritage of the
northern Korean provinces; its introductory chapters not only
describe the most famous monuments but, most importantly,
the book also provides maps of individual North Korean counties,
charting less prominent relics, many of which later disappeared
or were destroyed. This enables us to trace the destinies
of at least some Buddhist temples, Confucian academies or
local shrines which survived the damages of the Korean War
(1950–53) but have not been included into the official cultural
protection system of the Democratic People‘s Republic of Korea.

language and the origins of Korean alphabet, grammatical system of Middle and Pre-modern Korean and chapters analyzing various texts from 15th to early 20th century. Selected texts include a general description of the source,
the original text accompanied with a translation and a grammatical analysis with historical and linguistic comments. Besides the linguistic approach it should also serve as a material for proper understanding of the role of Korean script and related texts within the tradition of Korean literature and culture. The ultimate goal of the book is to enable readers to become familiar with historical aspects of the Korean language and encourage them to read not only examples contained in the book but also to obtain a suffi cient command to read a wide range of documents and texts in Middle and Pre-modern Korean. Far from despising modern translations of Classical Korean literature, we believe that the biggest delight of both scholars and readers is to read texts as they were written: in Middle Korean.

The present study aims to analyze discussions dealing with the Korean type of slavery from the perspective of its coherence with the ruling social ideology of Confucianism. Arguments of both supporters and opponents of slavery thus include mythological, philosophical, and practical standpoints which demonstrate a relativelybroad variety of interpreting Confucian paradigms in relation to this particular social phenomenon.
