Gregory Jackson’s research examines how corporate governance is influenced by diverse organizational and institutional contexts. His research utilizes cross-national comparison to better understand the regulatory and other societal influences on the corporation. His research aims to link disparate fields of scholarship, including institutional theory, organizational analysis, economic sociology, and comparative political economy. His two current projects includes work applying fuzzy sets and qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to understanding
organizational phenomenon, as well as understanding the social organization of creativity.

Gregory Jackson’s research has been published widely in leading business journals. A number of his projects on public policy have been sponsored by the Department of Trade and Industry (UK), the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (Japan), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, and the Hans-Boeckler Foundation (Germany). His research also is cited by The Economist, Financial Times, and BBC radio.

He is now Chief Editor of the OUP journal, Socio-Economic Review.

Debates regarding corporate governance have become increasingly important in Japan as the post-wa... more Debates regarding corporate governance have become increasingly important in Japan as the post-war model of bank-based, stakeholder-oriented corporate governance faces the new pressures associated with globalization and growing investor demands for shareholder value. Bringing together a group of leading scholars from economics, law, sociology and management studies, this book looks at how the Japanese approach to corporate governance and the firm have changed in the post-bubble era. The contributions offer a unique empirical exploration of why and how Japanese firms are reshaping their corporate governance arrangements, leading to greater diversity among firms and new 'hybrid' forms of corporate governance. The book concludes by looking at what effect these incremental but transformative changes may have on Japan's distinctive variety of capitalism.

Corporate Governance and International Business, however, brings together a number of leading scholars and pioneering pieces of research in order to demonstrate that corporate governance and international business are clearly linked. By solving principle-agent problems and fostering different forms of stakeholder investment, it illustrates how corporate governance influences the attractiveness of host countries to inward investors, as well as the internationalization strategies of multinational enterprises themselves.

Drawing on a number of different disciplinary approaches and methodological styles, the papers in this book also explore how international investors and the activities of multinational enterprises influence the institutional diversity of corporate governance around the world through novel patterns of diffusion and adaptation.

Die Deutsch-Britische Stiftung für das Studium der Industriegesellschaft wurde im Jahre 1973 auf ... more Die Deutsch-Britische Stiftung für das Studium der Industriegesellschaft wurde im Jahre 1973 auf Initiative des damaligen Bundespräsidenten Dr. Heinemann durch ein Abkommen zwischen den beiden Regierungen ins Leben gerufen und durch Verleihung einer königlichen Urkunde besiegelt. Die Mittel wurden anfangs von der deutschen Regierung zur Verfügung gestellt; seit 1979 beteiligen sich beide Regierungen an der Finanzierung. Die Stiftung sucht das Verständnis für die Probleme der Industriegesellschaft in den beiden Ländern zu vertiefen und Kontakte zwischen ihnen zu fördern. Sie unterstützt ausgewählte Forschungsprojekte im industriellen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Bereich, hauptsächlich bilaterale Vergleiche, die für Entscheidungsträger von praktischem Wert sein können. Die Verantwortung für den Inhalt der Publikationen der Deutsch-Britischen Stiftung liegt bei den jeweiligen Autoren.

Zusammenfassung: Im Kontext der feindlichen Übernahme von Mannesmann durch Vodafone diskutieren w... more Zusammenfassung: Im Kontext der feindlichen Übernahme von Mannesmann durch Vodafone diskutieren wir die Entwicklung des deutschen Corporate-Governence-Systems. Wir kritisieren die von Thomas Heinze in Jg. 53, Heft 4/2001, S. 641-674 der KZfSS vertretene Persistenzhypothese und zeigen nachhaltigen Wandel des deutschen Systems der Unternehmenskontrolle auf, den wir als Prozess der hybriden Konvergenz beschreiben. Im Zielkonflikt zwischen Unternehmens-und Profitabilitätswachstum haben sich die Präferenzen deutscher Unternehmensleitungen zu Gunsten der Renditesteigerung verschoben. Das zeigt sich in der Vorgabe von Renditezielen, der Abstellung von Quersubventionierung und der Konzentration auf Kerngeschäfte. Die inkrementellen Veränderungen der 1990er Jahre können als Prozesse der Ausbreitung von Märkten und deren Internalisierung durch die Unternehmen beschrieben werden. Durch institutionelle Schichtung und Konversion nähert sich das deutsche Corporate-Governance-System dem amerikanischen Marktmodell an.

In this paper we analyse the comparative capitalisms literature, which encompasses several analyt... more In this paper we analyse the comparative capitalisms literature, which encompasses several analytical frameworks, but shares common concerns in understanding the institutional foundations of diverse national 'varieties' of capitalism. One widespread weakness within this literature has been its static analysis and bias toward predicting institutional stability rather than change. Our contention is that introducing more dynamism into this literature must proceed on three distinct levels: the micro, meso and macro. On the micro level, it needs to develop a less deterministic view of institutions that incorporates a stronger understanding of how actors reshape institutions, not only as constraints on particular courses of action, but also as resources for new courses of action that (incrementally) transform those institutions. On the meso-level, it needs to specify more carefully the linkages among institutions and institutional domains and theorize how change in one affects change in the other. At the macro level, it needs to incorporate a compelling view of national and international politics that draws upon a theory of coalitional dynamics and the impact of particular rule-making processes that governs institutional reform in each nation.
