It is contended that the original Frisian population changed to the more prestigeous Dutch language under the influence of the local rulers of the Cammingha family. The transition must have occurred in the 16th or 17th century, probably beginning in the western villages Hollum and Ballum. It is shown that the result is a language with a Frisian grammar and phonetics, where the lexicon is mainly Dutch (with the exception of the home-bound stratum of the vocabulary). Moreover, it is cautiously attempted here to draw some comparisons with other Frisian-Dutch mixed dialects.

In section 1 the word is distinguished from two other, homophonous, instances afwan, meaning 'wall' and 'rigging (on a ship) " respectively., ,Ultimately it turns out, however, that these homophones do have a common etymon. In 1915, in a popular Frisian weekly, the word already caught the attention. Several, by now curious, attempts were made then to provide an etymology, as is demonstrated in section 2. In section 3 we present our own etymology, suggesting that the word should be related to an Ab/aut form of a common Germanic verb, which nowadays shows up in German and Dutch wenden, 'to turn '. This also accounts for the semantics of the idiomatic expression, which has been derived from a meaning ofwan that refers to a turn in traditional threshing. Frisian dictionaries have not been very exact-and consistent in their interpretation and description of the meaning ofy.ran, as is shown in section 4. * Foar weardefol kommintaar op in eardere kladde betankje ik Dirk Boutkan. 46 1. We have now found a clear Old Frisian example in a text in the Fivelgo manuscript (ca. 1440). The attestation is the more compelling, since it contains aM \be characteristics ofType IIin Mithun's (1984) hierarchy.
