On His Judgement Alone by Mary Smythe – Excerpt & Giveaway

Good afternoon everyone,

On His Judgement Alone is Mary Smythe’s latest novel, and it has just released today! I’m so happy to be celebrating with her because I’ve loved so many of her previous books, and this one sounds especially compelling.

This story shines a bright light on Mr Darcy’s decision to separate Bingley and Jane and forces him to confront the consequences of believing he knew best,  and I know that’s a premise many of you absolutely love!

Mary is visiting today with an excerpt that captures Darcy at a pivotal moment: reflective, unsettled, and beginning to realise he had no right to determine his friend’s happiness. I loved it. It’s exactly the kind of emotional reckoning I crave in a variation 😍 I truly hope you enjoy it just as much! If you do, be sure to leave a comment and enter the giveaway Quills & Quartos is hosting.

Thank you so much for visiting, Mary! I cannot wait for everyone to read this one 📖

NEW excerpt

They appeared at Gracechurch Street the following day, much to the apparent astonishment and pleasure of the Gardiner household. Miss Bennet, to Darcy’s own surprise, appeared to be the most affected by his friend’s arrival—she verily glowed with the strength of her smile.

And here I believed her indifferent, he mused as he observed the pair from across the room where he stood before a window facing the street. How else have I misjudged?

His gaze moved to where Elizabeth sat with her sister, supposedly taking part in their conversation but really remaining silent as she, too, watched what unfolded between Bingley and Miss Bennet with great interest. He thought she might have bounced a little in place, which brought a fond smile to his lips.

Although he ought to be taking further note of her elder sister’s manner, Darcy could not tear his attention away from Elizabeth. She was lovelier than ever with a sparkle of joy lighting up her fine eyes. Nay, not a sparkle, an entire constellation of twinkling stars. Her cheeks were flushed with scarcely repressed pleasure, and her curls bounced with every eager tilt of her head. She was dressed plainly for a day at home, but she had no need of rich fabrics to enhance her beauty; she outshone every other lady in London with her vivacious esprit.

Still carefully watching, Darcy noted the moment that Elizabeth stood and mumbled some excuse before leaving the reunited couple to themselves. She began moving in his direction, and he heard the teacup he was holding begin to rattle in its saucer. He quickly set it aside lest he make a fool of himself by spilling it either on her or himself.

“Mr Darcy,” she greeted, her lips lifted in a grin that suffused felicity throughout the rest of her features. “I cannot thank you enough for what you have done.”

Addled by his admiration of her, Darcy cleared his throat. Even so, his response was rather hoarse. “I do not take your meaning.”

“I think you do,” was her coy rejoinder. She then looked over her shoulder to where Bingley had taken her place on the sofa next to Miss Bennet. The pair of them had their heads bent together in close confederation. Turning to face him again, Elizabeth said, “You have brought Mr Bingley back to Jane when we believed all hope was lost. We can never repay such kindness, but know that you have my undying gratitude.”

“It was entirely my pleasure,” he replied with utter honesty, basking in the glow of her praise. “However, I did not do much.”

“On the contrary!” she countered, reaching out to place her hand upon his forearm. Darcy felt the heat of her fingers even through his coat, and the tingle of goose-skin erupted at the point of contact. “I have always suspected that Mr Bingley’s sisters did not approve of Jane and that they kept her presence in London from him, but I had no notion of how to correct the situation. We ladies are not permitted much freedom when it comes to arranging our futures. If we are to be married, we are entirely at the gentleman’s convenience.”

Darcy’s heart began to pound when the word ‘married’ slipped from between Elizabeth’s lips. How he longed to speak and affix her own future to himself, but he was not yet certain that he could overcome the consequential disadvantages of taking her to wife. Could he be as bold as Bingley and seize his chance at happiness without reference to society’s narrow-minded standards?

Elizabeth shook her head. “But that is neither here nor there. I wish to thank you, again and again, for informing Mr Bingley of my sister’s residence here. Had it been left up to others…” Her words faded with a meaningful arch of her eyebrows, leaving Darcy in no question as to whom she referred. “Well, it might have ended very differently for Jane. I am sorry for ever misjudging you and your goodness.”

Darcy’s heart, which had been racing, tripped over itself. “I beg your pardon?”

“I know we started off on the wrong foot,” she replied airily with a wave of her hand, “but that is all forgotten now. We may begin again as friends, if you like. Even if not, my good opinion of you is assured forever.”

“I…” Darcy grasped for words to respond, but none were immediately forthcoming. “Forgive me, but I do not understand.”

She tipped her head at him and gave him a queer smile, as if she could not quite understand him in return. “I do not think it is any great secret that we disliked one another back in the autumn. Why, the entire neighbourhood was aware of our animosity. You declared me ‘barely tolerable’. I called you ‘haughty and prideful’…”

Darcy’s stomach clenched at Elizabeth’s reference to that stupid thing he had said at that blasted assembly where they had met. He had known then that she had heard the insult—that had been the point in making it, after all—but it somehow had not occurred to him that she would have nurtured a grudge over it. Which was naïve of him, he realised, because what young lady would think well of a gentleman who had publicly wounded her vanity in such a fashion?

Yet, somehow, he had remained entirely blind to her reasonable aversion to him thereafter. From the way she spoke, he must assume that she had only set it aside that very day when he and Bingley had walked through the door of her uncle’s house. Were all their other dealings between the assembly and the present false? Or had he misinterpreted her antagonism as flirting?

“Well,” Elizabeth said, holding out her hand for him to shake when he had remained stonily silent too long. “Regardless of our previous feelings for one another, I call a truce. I do hope that we shall be able to keep it.”

NEW book blurb

I do not see what right Mr Darcy had to decide on the propriety of his friend’s inclination, or why, upon his own judgement alone, he was to determine and direct in what manner that friend was to be happy

When Fitzwilliam Darcy hides Jane Bennet’s presence in London from his friend Bingley, he assures himself it was done for the best. That he was forced to collude with the scheming Miss Bingley and betray his own principles to do it is immaterial—Bingley cannot be trusted to behave rationally where Miss Bennet is concerned.
But guilt proves a persistent companion, especially when Darcy cannot forget Jane’s spirited sister Elizabeth, whose fine eyes and clever wit haunt him still. A chance encounter at the theatre forces him to confront the hypocrisy of his interference and consider making amends—but will Elizabeth ever forgive him for the pain he’s caused her beloved sister?
As the consequences of his meddling unfold, Darcy must face an uncomfortable truth: he had no right to decide the propriety of his friend’s inclination or determine how Bingley should find happiness. And as his own feelings for Elizabeth grow impossible to deny, he begins to question everything—his judgment, his pride, and the very foundations upon which he’s built his understanding of love, duty, and honor.
Can a man who orchestrated another’s heartbreak find redemption? Or will Darcy’s arrogance cost him the only woman who could truly make him happy?

Noblest Intentions by Monica Fairview – Excerpt & Giveaway

Good afternoon everyone,

Today I’m very happy to share a spotlight on Noblest Intentions, Monica Fairview’s latest release. Monica is a longtime JAFF writer whose books I absolutely love, and I’m quite eager to read this one too.

This variation begins with a rescue in Hyde Park and a very mistaken assumption on Darcy’s part. Although he feels a strong attraction to Elizabeth, he believes her to be married and makes it clear he will not pursue the acquaintance. However, we all know that cannot possibly be the end of it! In the excerpt Monica has brought us today, we see Mr. Darcy discovering that Elizabeth is not, in fact, a married woman as he assumed, but an unmarried niece 🙂

Monica has shared that, unlike her more action-packed stories, this novel focuses firmly on Darcy and Elizabeth, so I’m very curious to see how different the tone feels. She has certainly spoiled us with many unforgettable romantic moments in the past, so I cannot wait to see what she has in store this time.

Be sure to check out the excerpt below, and don’t forget to leave a comment on this post to enter the giveaway she is kindly offering.

Thank you so much for stopping by, Monica, it’s always such a pleasure to have you here!

NEW excerpt

Hello, dear readers! Today I am visiting Rita’s blog to give you a flavor of my latest novel, Noblest Intentions. It’s a book I really enjoyed writing. It’s a little bit different from my other books. My writing can sometimes be a bit fast paced with occasional moments of slapstick. I also like to include a large cast of characters.

Noblest Intentions was a new experience for me. It’s a much quieter kind of novel, with the focus firmly on Darcy and Elizabeth. It is more earnest than I’m used to, as well as less angsty. I deliberately slowed down the pace when I was writing. In a way, the novel was my own way of escaping from the craziness of the world around us.

In today’s excerpt, Darcy is astonished to discover that the young lady he rescued from a lake was not a married woman with a child as he had originally believed!

***

Darcy turned over the letter. It was written on fine paper, top quality, matching Darcy’s own type of paper. The penmanship was even and strong. So far, he could not fault anything about Mr. Gardiner. The fact that he wanted to find fault was strange in itself. Why did he want to think of Maggie’s father as inferior, somehow? Why was he so easily thrown off balance this morning, both literally and metaphorically?

“How long must I wait?” said Georgiana. “Will you read it aloud, William?”

“I will, but I warn you, if I find anything I do not think you should hear, I will stop.”

“Of course,” she said, training her eyes on him. “Though I cannot imagine what that could be.”

Dear Mr. Darcy,

First, allow me to express my heartfelt thanks for the service you rendered my daughter Margaret. We owe you a debt of gratitude for saving Margaret’s life. There is no way to put into words the feelings that such a selfless act invoked in both my wife and myself.

Darcy was not particularly interested in the shared feelings of husband and wife. He had deliberately declined to know anything about the young woman he had met in the park. Why must he be reading this letter now? If it were not for Georgiana, he would crumple the letter into a ball and throw it into the fire.

But Georgiana was waiting expectantly, and he had no choice but to continue reading.

My niece Elizabeth has given us a full account of what happened in Hyde Park—

Darcy blinked and stopped in confusion.

His surprise was echoed in Georgiana’s face. “His niece? What does he mean? William, I do not understand.”

“Neither do I,” said Darcy. The air in the room had suddenly become thick, and he felt breathless. “Let me continue reading so we can clarify the matter.”

Inexplicably, his hand was slightly unsteady when he picked up the letter again.

My niece Elizabeth has given us a full account of what happened in Hyde Park especially of the heroic way you jumped into the Serpentine without regard for your own safety, despite the risk of plunging into water at this time of the year.

Darcy’s thoughts were racing. Who was this niece of his? Had she been a witness at the park? Or, heaven forbid, did he mean that the young woman he had carried in his arms was not married, and Maggie was not her daughter? No, it could not be!

Moreover, she has particularly expressed her appreciation for your kindness in receiving them both into your house, your generosity and your concern for their wellbeing on such a trying occasion.

It is not my intention by writing to impose upon you. In fact, my niece, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, is of the opinion that a visit from us would not be welcome, because of the difference in our social spheres. Naturally, I will respect your wishes, if that is your preference. You need only ignore this letter, and your message will be understood.

If that is the case, in lieu of thanking you in person, I hope you will allow me to send a token of appreciation in the form of some special lace one of my clients has brought back from Brussels. It is of the highest quality in England. I hope your sister Miss Darcy would be willing to accept it. It is only a token, of course, but at least I can offer it as an expression of our gratitude for your noble deed.”

Meanwhile, we will also be returning the dress Miss Darcy kindly lent to my niece, and all the other items of clothing that were borrowed.

With our sincerest thanks, I remain forever at your service.

Edward Gardiner

Darcy stared at the letter in disbelief. How could he have made such a fundamental error? When did he assume that the young lady was a mother?

“I cannot believe it!” he exclaimed, coming to his feet and going to the window in agitation.

This is what happened when one did not follow social conventions. If he had done the usual thing and asked for an introduction, then he would have known that she was not married.

He turned to his sister. “Did you know the young lady was not the child’s mother?”

“I did not. Everything happened at once, I did not stop to think about it, but I remember now that Maggie said she was six, and the lady we thought was her mother could not have been more than twenty.”

Darcy nodded. He had noticed it, too, but why had he not put two and two together? Then again, why should he? At first his main concern was rescuing the little girl, then keeping both her and the young lady warm, then ensuring that he and the others did not fall ill.

“Well then, there you have your answer. Miss Bennet is safe, and so is her cousin Maggie.”

Georgiana beamed. “Yes. And I am very relieved to hear it. Shall we write and tell them we would be happy to receive them? They have been waiting three days now to receive a response. You had better tell them you were ill, but you are fully recovered.”

Now that he knew Miss Bennet was unmarried, he had even less intention of pursuing the acquaintance. She may not be someone’s wife, but it did not make Miss Bennet any more suitable for him.

Even if he kept remembering how it felt to hold her in his arms.

He wrestled with himself. He wanted to write back, but his mind told him that it was foolhardy to encourage anything more.

His mind won.

“I will not be writing to them.”

Georgiana stared at him with her mouth open, aghast.

“You will not? But why?”

Because Miss Bennet was too tempting. “Because they are not our kind of people, Georgiana,” he replied gently. “It is better not to raise expectations and give them the wrong impression. Even if they called on us, we would not call on them. We cannot pursue a connection with someone we met in Hyde Park. It is the way of the world. It is better to keep everything clear from the beginning.”

She looked unhappy. “I suppose that is true. They are strangers. We did not even know the young lady’s name until today.”

Because Darcy had deliberately refused to learn it. Would he have done the same, if he knew she was unmarried? He would never know.

“It is for the best.”

NEW book blurb

When Fitzwilliam Darcy meets a young lady following an unfortunate event, he is strongly attracted to her. Unfortunately, a relationship with her is absolutely out of the question, given her circumstances. She is completely out of his reach.

Or is she? First appearances may be deceptive. As they each discover more about each other, Elizabeth and Darcy’s mutual attraction grows. Just as romance begins to blossom, an unexpected scandal brews, and Elizabeth may be forced to choose between love and practicality. What will she choose?

Noblest Intentions is an Elizabeth and Darcy first impressions, Regency variation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
It is a low angst, full-length novel with a touch of comedy and a warm, sweet ending.

Room for Improvement by Jessie Lewis & Amy D’Orazio

After Elizabeth rejects Mr. Darcy at Hunsford, this variation takes them both to Brighton when she unexpectedly inherits a crumbling seaside mansion. Lord Saye, being Lord Saye, decides to lease the barely habitable house for the summer, which means Darcy and Elizabeth are thrown into close quarters surrounded by renovations, social rivals, and quite a few misunderstandings. With all the seaside drama and forced proximity, the story gives them a very different (and very entertaining) path toward reconciliation full of humor, tension, and plenty of salt air.

I absolutely loved the setting of this book and the dynamics it created between all the characters. The seaside backdrop, the dilapidated beachfront mansion, and all the chaos that came with it gave the story a refreshing energy. I could imagine every single scene in my mind as if I was watching a movie, and at times could even feel the breeze of the ocean 🙂 I especially enjoyed the beach outings, the lively encounters at the house, the forced proximity between Elizabeth and Darcy, and of course, let’s not forget the repeated opportunities for Elizabeth (and me) to glimpse Mr. Darcy in a wet shirt 😊 The change of scenery definitely brought a freshness to the story that made it feel vibrant and new, which may seem like a small detail, but when people read as many JAFF books as I do, this is definitely a plus that makes the book stand out.

The romance between Elizabeth and Darcy was also one of my favorite aspects of the book. Because they were so frequently thrown together, they had the chance to truly see the best in one another. They laughed together over Lord Saye’s antics, longed for each other in quiet moments, and even experienced flashes of jealousy that increased the tension. Additionally, their first kiss was absolutely magical! The moment was tense, romantic, and emotional. Mr. Darcy was so swoon-worthy in that scene in particular, and honestly, in the book in general! Ice creams included 😉

As always, Lord Saye’s character was a highlight. He was the mastermind behind many of Darcy’s wet-shirt moments and brought a wonderful layer of humor to the story, not only through his teasing of Darcy, but also when he himself became the target of jokes. The comedy in the book was the perfect contrast to the emotional intensity of the romance and one of the aspects that made it a page turner 😊

I admit it was a bit difficult to believe that a viscount and his entire family would willingly move into a house so thoroughly in disrepair that walls were in danger of collapsing. However, that implausibility allowed for many entertaining and memorable scenes. If you are willing to suspend disbelief on that point, you will likely find the resulting commotion well worth it.

The novel is also very well written, and I found myself eagerly anticipating each new scene, curious to see how the next encounter would unfold.

Overall, I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys forced proximity between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth, strong romantic tension, and a healthy dose of humor mixed with heartfelt emotion. It delivers swoony Darcy moments, playful banter, memorable secondary characters, and just enough angst to keep things exciting without becoming heavy. If you’re looking for a fresh, entertaining variation with plenty of charm (and wet shirts!), this one is definitely worth picking up.

Someone’s got to give, and Darcy is determined to win. Then again, so is Elizabeth…

A Cleverly (Un)contrived Compromise is a light-hearted, sweet Regency romantic comedy inspired by Jane Austen’s timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice.

Hello everyone,

I came across a few books on sale and, after sharing five of them on social media, I thought I’d put them all together in one post.

It’s not a huge list today, but I figured there were enough to justify a quick update.

As always, these are just the deals I happened to find, so if you know of any others, feel free to share them with the rest of us!

A Splendidly (un)suitable Match – Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

When love needs a helping hand — or paw.

Fitzwilliam Darcy has his hands full. His cousin had his heart broken, his sister’s confidence was recently shattered, one of his closest friends has taken on more responsibility than he can possibly handle, and an overbearing social climber has decided to prove to Darcy that she is his perfect match.

When all of them travel together to Netherfield Park, everything goes wrong. Darcy finds himself dancing when he would rather not, cavorting with mules, and laughing with an impertinent young miss who shows him the lighter side of life.

Elizabeth Bennet’s sympathies often extend to the disadvantaged and mistreated. So, when she meets Fitzwilliam Darcy under less than flattering circumstances, her heart goes out to the unfortunate gentleman. Extending him her friendship and her humor, she tries to be content with her lot while helping her dearest sister and friend find love with their new neighbors at Netherfield Park. But the more she comes to know Mr. Darcy, the greater his danger to her heart.

Too Fond of Stars- Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

When Anne Elliot removes directly to Bath with her family to satisfy Sir Walter’s need to retrench but desire for society, she does so reluctantly. She intends to make the best of her situation, finding friends and occupations enough in the town to keep her busy and useful and leaving her little time to dwell on the couple who have taken on tenancy of Kellynch Hall, or the gentleman from her own past who must likely make his home there with them before too long.

Captain Frederick Wentworth cannot bear the thought of returning to Somerset, let alone to Anne Elliot’s former home, for he has not forgotten her nor the heartbreak she caused him by ending their engagement eight years previously. He instead stays on in Bath, where he might be safe from such remembrance – until Anne herself crosses his path.

Unexpectedly reunited by this twist of fate, can Captain Wentworth and Anne Elliot resolve their past misunderstanding and rediscover the love they once shared, or will Anne’s family and Frederick’s pride again prevent them from finding happiness?

This is book one of the Fate and Fortune series, a variation on Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

A rich young fellow, Charles, and his forbidding, aristocratic friend, Mr Darcy, move into a new neighbourhood. There, their lives become entangled with a family, the Bennets, who have five charming daughters, and an entailed estate. Sound familiar? How about taking a look at events through the eyes of Mr Darcy…?

The Darcy Decision – Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet have finally confessed their true feelings for one another and decided to marry – and not even Mr Bennet’s opposition will prevent their future happiness.

Their friends support the match, even if Elizabeth’s father remains an obstacle, and the group departs to London for Christmas. Caroline Bingley seems to be the only person of their party to recognise the true folly of the match, and will stop at nothing to force Fitzwilliam Darcy to see sense, even if that means involving his own aunt, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who is surely against such a marriage…

Can Darcy and Elizabeth overcome this last opposition even from those close to them and learn from the obstacles they have faced thus far on their journey to happily ever after?

The Darcy Decision is a Pride and Prejudice variation, and the conclusion of the Pathway to Pemberley Series.

The Peacock & The Raven – Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

Pride. Prejudice. Privilege Prevails.

Bennett Morgan is a fiercely independent man navigating the delicate balance of family expectations and his personal aspirations. His sharp wit and determination set him apart in a world that still values tradition over individuality. When he crosses paths with Elizabeth Davis—a reserved, wealthy woman whose privilege and arrogance are the polar opposite to his approachability — their interactions spark a slow burn of witty banter, undeniable chemistry, and intense misunderstandings.

Set against the backdrop of a more contemporary urban and rural setting than its classic counterpart, this romantic comedy explores the shifting dynamics of class conflict and gender roles in a reimagined era. Bennett challenges Ms. Davis’s preconceived notions about love, family, and duty, while she forces him to confront his own biases. Their evolving relationship is filled with longing and moments of heartbreak, culminating in a heartfelt second chance that feels earned through their personal growth and mutual respect.

As scandal threatens the Morgan family and gossip culture magnifies every misstep, Bennett must navigate romantic rivals, family drama, and societal expectations to find his place in a world where tradition usually rules the day. Ms. Davis’s character redemption transforms her from an aloof figure to a lady of great status willing to sacrifice her pride for the man she loves, making this unlikely match a testament to the power of vulnerability and change. Pride and Prejudice has never felt so absurd, fresh, and utterly captivating.

The Peacock & The Raven is part of the Rebel Canon, a collection of works that challenge traditional literary norms, reinterpreting classics with a bold feminist twist. By subverting established views on gender, power, and societal expectations, it offers fresh narratives that redefine the literary canon.

Susan – Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

Susan is a Jane Austen Prequel (or Pride and Prejudice Variation) brilliantly capturing Austen’s own Lady Susan as a young girl.

A BookLife 2021 Quarterfinalist, Susan has won the Gold Medal/First Place in the PenCraft, Global, eLit and Historical Fiction Company Book Awards, along with numerous other awards.

Publishers Weekly starred review: “McVeigh’s prose and plotting are pitch-perfect. Emma mingles with Pride and Prejudice in a delightful confrontation between the two books’ worlds… This Austen-inspired novel echoes the master herself.”

Familiar characters abound – Frank Churchill, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, Mr Collins – but Susan – mischievous and manipulative – is the star. This is Austen that even Austen might have loved, with a touch of Georgette Heyer in the romantic sections. Fans of Bridgerton will also relish this classic regency romance, the first in a six-book series.

Sixteen-year-old Susan Smithson – pretty but poor, clever but capricious – has just been expelled from a school for young ladies in London.

At the mansion of the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh, she attracts a raffish young nobleman. But, at the first hint of scandal, her guardian dispatches her to her uncle Collins’ rectory in Kent, where her sensible cousin Alicia lives and “where nothing ever happens.”

Here Susan mischievously inspires the local squire to put on a play, with consequences no one could possibly have foreseen. What with the unexpected arrival of Frank Churchill, Alicia’s falling in love and a tumultuous elopement, rural Kent will surely never seem safe again…

Torn – Currently on sale for 2,99$

Book Blurb:

“TORN” is a romantic, Regency “Pride and Prejudice” Variation, full of angst and drama, filled with emotions. A story about different types of love, about honour and loyalty, about one’s own happiness and that of others.
The road to “Happily Ever After” is set with obstacles to overcome, making the journey more arduous for our beloved characters—and for the readers.
Divided by pride, prejudice, and misunderstandings, betrayed by their temper and wounded by vanity, Elizabeth and Darcy take separate paths in the heat of anger—and are tormented when they must reap what they have sown.
Darcy struggles to avoid the woman he loves most ardently, but fate keeps bringing them together. Elizabeth’s thoughts wander to Mr Darcy and, even in his absence, her feelings improve, until she realises he is the only man in the world with whom she could be truly happy. Such revelations come too late when both are bound by promises to others. Can they live a lifetime torn between love and duty?
Stealing a moment of passion one hot summer night, how can Elizabeth and Darcy continue without each other after tasting the delight of being together?
There are no real “villains” in this story to interfere between ODC, there is nobody for the readers to blame and to hate. Elizabeth and Darcy’s deep, powerful love is mutually acknowledged but they are still kept apart by their excellent characters, their honour and by promises they have made to the benefit of others. They are loyal to each other, but not selfish enough to be disloyal to those who need them.
Eventually, they will find the strength to satisfy their desires and to reach the well-deserved fulfilment of their passionate love, while continuing to generously use their influence and wealth.

The story is rated ‘Moderate’ for hot romance but not descriptive sex scenes.

The Mistress of All – Currenlty on sale for 2,99$

Book Blurb:

The Mistress of All is a complex novel, that mixes romance and angst. It is recommended for a mature audience, due to the subjects of violence and abuse – which are often mentioned but never detailed other than in Elizabeth’s recollections.

This is the story of Elizabeth Bennet, thrown by fate and unfortunate circumstances into the middle of an ordeal from which she struggles to escape, fighting for her life. Her character, her strength and her determination are tested more than ever before. She has to enter into a battle that she must win, or the loss will be immeasurable. She has a strong ally in Darcy, first from afar, then by her side. The man she rejected just a month before will return to prove his loyalty, and the depth of his feelings. Elizabeth also benefits from the loyal support of a friend – a young woman of colour – who struggles to prove her worthiness and find her deserved place in a society unwilling to accept her.

The story begins when Elizabeth returns from Kent and stays in London for several days. She is surprised to find her sister Jane and aunt in a new, but rather close acquaintance with a young earl and his mother. Over those several days, the nightmare slowly envelops the Bennets and Gardiners, and the threat of ruin and misery weighs heavily on them. To their apparent salvation came a hasty and strange – but so timely – marriage proposal from one of the most illustrious gentlemen of the ton. Despite her reasoning, her suspicions, her fears and her lack of feeling for the man she barely knows and even less respects, she does not dare refuse a third marriage proposal, which would throw her entire family into ruin.

By the time of her marriage, Darcy has returned to London and Mr. Bingley has returned to Jane. Things appear to have improved for the Bennets. But for Elizabeth, it is too late. Trapped in a marriage as dark as a nightmare, never consummated but dreadful nevertheless, she must protect herself and those around her from the evilness and cruelty of a horrid man and his supportive mother and friends. With fate’s mercy, Elizabeth’s ordeal will not last long. Circumstances turn her into a widow, one of the wealthiest and most influential women in London, with a power she is not yet ready to use.

Darcy’s feelings are the same, while Elizabeth’s are quite the opposite compared with those she expressed in Kent. Darcy is the only man she can trust. Near him, she feels safe, protected and supported. But her heart is so full of hate, distrust and plans for revenge, that it has little room for love and happiness.
Darcy’s feelings for Elizabeth have remained strong and deep, but the woman he adored had changed dramatically. She is now above him in terms of position, wealth, and power. While she accepts him as a friend, and gratefully benefits from his support, Elizabeth is not ready to surrender to the power of another man yet, even if she has no reason to doubt his affection, his honour or his character. Elizabeth Bennet is now Lady Barrington – smart, well educated and beautiful, with the power and means to treat those around her as she pleases. Her old sweetness, her teasing wit, the smile that made her eyes sparkle, her musical laugh and her tendency to joke seem lost.
But they are only deeply buried under fear, and hate and are just waiting for the right moment and the right man to bring them back up into the light again.

Most Ardently – Currently on sale for 2,99$

Book Blurb:

A trans boy searches for a future—and a romance—in which he can live and love openly as himself in this heartwrenching YA reimagining of Pride & Prejudice, perfect for fans of Bridgerton and Gwen and Art Are Not in Love.

London, 1812. Oliver Bennet feels trapped. Not just by the endless corsets, petticoats and skirts he’s forced to wear on a daily basis, but also by society’s expectations. The world—and the vast majority of his family and friends—think Oliver is a girl named Elizabeth. He is therefore expected to mingle at balls wearing a pretty dress, entertain suitors regardless of his interest in them, and ultimately become someone’s wife.

But Oliver can’t bear the thought of such a fate. He finds solace in the few times he can sneak out of his family’s home and explore the city rightfully dressed as a young gentleman. It’s during one such excursion when Oliver becomes acquainted with Darcy, a sulky young man who had been rude to “Elizabeth” at a recent social function. But in the comfort of being out of the public eye, Oliver comes to find that Darcy is actually a sweet, intelligent boy with a warm heart. And not to mention incredibly attractive.

As Oliver is able to spend more time as his true self, often with Darcy, part of him dares begin to hope that his dream of love and life as a man could be possible. But suitors are growing bolder—and even threatening—and his mother is growing more desperate to see him settled into an engagement. Oliver will have to choose: Settle for safety, security, and a life of pretending to be something he’s not, or risk it all for a slim chance at freedom, love, and a life that can be truly, honestly his own.

This bittersweet Pride & Prejudice remix follows a trans boy yearning for the freedom to live openly, centering queerness in a well-known story of longing and subverting society’s patriarchal and cisheteronormative expectations.

Officious Interference by Amy D’Orazio – Excerpt & Giveaway

Good afternoon everyone,

It is release day for one of my favourite authors! Amy D’orazio has just released Officious Interference, a Pride and Prejudice variation in which, after abandoning a failed proposal, a humbled Mr. Darcy returns determined to win Elizabeth’s love, only to face meddling relations, a rival suitor, and scandalous gossip that threaten their second chance at happiness.

I absolutely love the inclusion of a rival suitor because I’m always here for ODC being forced to fight for their love, especially when a little jealousy is involved! So I am very eager to listen to the audiobook 🎧 And yes, the audiobook should be hitting the shelves shortly, so stay tuned.

Amy is visiting today with an excerpt that shows Mr. Darcy growing quietly jealous and unsettled as he learns Elizabeth is spending time with other eligible gentlemen, and guess what? I loved it! It is definitely the type of situation I crave for in a book 😍 I hope you love it too! If you do, don’t forget to leave a comment on this post and apply for the giveaway Quills & Quartos is offering.

Thank you so much for visiting, Amy! I am very much looking forward to reading your book 📖

P.S – I love this cover!!!

NEW excerpt

The day prior to the assembly, Bingley and Darcy again went to call at Longbourn. By this time, Darcy would have been shocked if Elizabeth had been in her own mother’s drawing room; evidently, she and Miss Mary King were inseparable.

Bingley had none of the frustration that he had. Miss Bennet had been perhaps a trifle cool to him at first but had warmed rapidly. She was casting demure looks at Bingley from the moment they were announced, and he strode confidently to join her where she sat by an open window. Darcy followed, albeit less confidently, hoping Miss Bennet might offer some information on her sister’s whereabouts. The rest of the drawing room had returned to whatever they had been doing when the two men arrived, and thus Darcy felt unembarrassed by delving directly into his questions.

“I do not believe I have had the pleasure of meeting the owners of Ashworth. Is the estate nearby?” he asked Miss Bennet, speaking quickly.

“Just above ten miles,” Miss Bennet replied with a demure smile. “It is owned by the Goddards. Mrs Goddard is Miss King’s aunt.”

Bingley spoke up, likely for no other reason than to direct Miss Bennet’s attention back to himself. “I believe I remember Miss King from the ball at Netherfield.”

Miss Bennet smiled. “Yes, she was there.”

With that, Miss Bennet and Bingley were back in their tête-à-tête and Darcy was forgotten. Mrs Bennet noticed his discomfiture and called him to come and sit by her, which he did albeit reluctantly.

“I heard you ask about Miss King,” she said with an exaggerated hush.

“Nasty, freckled thing,” Miss Lydia called from her chair.

“Lydia, pray do not speak so,” Mrs Bennet scolded. To Darcy she said, “Alas, yes, she is a very plain girl. Nothing at all to my girls! Everyone has always said the Miss Bennets are the jewels of the county! But forgive me; I do not like to boast of my own children.”

She paused, and Darcy, after a moment to realise what was expected of him, said, “Your daughters are undoubtedly the beauties of the county.”

One in particular and likely not the one you think I mean.

“Oh, you are very good, sir,” she said with a little pat on his sleeve. “But dear Miss King. The trouble is all those freckles—what she ought to do is rub her face with lemon juice and Gowland’s. It might not make them disappear, but they would get lighter.” She nodded vigorously at him. “And I must say, I do not believe her aunt’s maid is doing what she could with her hair; Lizzy’s hair is just as curly and yet never so frizzled and untidy!”

Again she paused, but this time Darcy was quicker to respond. “Miss Elizabeth has beautiful hair.”

I should very much like to run my hands through it.

“Lizzy’s hair can become quite unkempt when she is out scampering about, and do not even ask me what happens when she is in wind!” Mrs Bennet clucked and shook her head, frowning and tugging at the lace in her sleeves.

Darcy waited patiently, but when it seemed that the storytelling got stuck, he enquired, “And what of Miss King?”

“Oh yes. Well, you must remember George Wickham whom we all admired so much in the autumn when he joined up with Forster’s regiment.”

A faint look of uncertain comprehension dawned on Mrs Bennet’s face—no doubt she remembered, belatedly, his association with Wickham. She glanced at Darcy uneasily for a moment.

He smiled blandly at her, and it seemed reassurance enough.

“We all thought he quite admired our Lizzy, but she did nothing at all to encourage him. Could not be bothered! Next we knew, he had offered for Miss King. She is a sweet girl, but nothing at all to Lizzy! I can only imagine the wiles she employed to draw him in!”

If I know Wickham, it could only have been money. That aside, he had to admit to some pleasure in Mrs Bennet’s saying that Elizabeth had done nothing to encourage Wickham.

“But the engagement was announced prematurely. Miss King’s uncle had not given his consent and must have refused it, for suddenly the engagement was off and Miss King was sent to live with another uncle in Liverpool.”

Here again Miss Lydia entered the conversation. “But dear Wickham was so much in love that he left his regiment, and went down to Liverpool to persuade her to elope with him.”

“Fortunately her uncle stopped it before they did,” said Mrs Bennet briskly. “It seems Mr Wickham had fooled us all! Played quite the gentleman and meanwhile had run up debts all over Meryton and likely beyond; they did not wish to see Miss King’s inheritance wasted on clearing his name.”

The names may change, but it is always the same story for Wickham. “Miss King had recently come into some money?”

“Ten thousand pounds from her grandfather.” Mrs Bennet shook her head regretfully. “Poor dear. She was quite distraught. My Lizzy has been just what the girl needs to mend her broken heart. Of course it is no hardship to Lizzy—they are a merry party over there at Ashworth! I told Mr Bennet, if this goes on, we shall need another carriage.”

Something in the way she said ‘merry party’ raised Darcy’s alarm. “Has Miss King many cousins?”

“Mr Robert Goddard is the only one there, but he is there with his friend Sir James of…oh, who knows? I cannot recall, but he is a fine young man, as is young Goddard. You would not have met them in the autumn—they were travelling. They will be at the assembly, I daresay.”

“Excellent.” Darcy forced a smile. In fact, it was anything but excellent. Was this why Elizabeth was forever elsewhere? He remembered vividly what had happened to him when Elizabeth visited Netherfield to nurse her sister; how much worse was it for these gentlemen when she was there for no other purpose but to visit, flirt, charm, and be charmed?

He did his best not to be taciturn for the rest of the call, but his mind was whirling. Had he a rival?

NEW book blurb

When Mr Darcy discovers Elizabeth Bennet’s true feelings, he’s grateful the ill-fated proposal he had planned to make in Kent was stopped. But as the London Season drags on, he realizes the truth: he cannot be happy without her. Determined to become the man worthy of her regard, he returns to Hertfordshire with a singular purpose—to win her heart.

If only it were that simple. Darcy has indeed reformed himself, tempering his pride and learning humility, but Elizabeth’s wounded feelings and lingering resentment cannot be overcome in a day. Just as she begins to see the changes in him and tentatively accept his friendship, a host of new obstacles emerge to test them both.

Meddling relations with their own agendas interfere at the worst possible moments. Well-meaning friends offer advice that only complicates matters further. Most troublesome of all is a rival suitor—charming, persistent, and determined to claim Elizabeth for himself—who seems to appear whenever Darcy and Elizabeth draw close.

Yet Darcy perseveres, and slowly, painfully, Elizabeth’s heart begins to soften. Just when happiness seems within their grasp and all misunderstandings appear resolved, malicious gossip begins to circulate about Elizabeth’s character and reputation. The whispers threaten not only her standing in society but Darcy’s as well, forcing them both to confront an agonizing question: can their love survive such a scandal, or will propriety and duty destroy their chance at a future together forever?

Officious Interference is a low angst novel length Pride and Prejudice variation. Set in the regency era, this tale is an enemies to lovers second chance romance that includes a love triangle and a scandalous elopement. The content is closed-door.

Enemies to lovers romance – pining/unrequited love – interference of meddling friends and relatives- class differences – false accusations, gossip, scandal – ruined reputation – jealous friend/villain – love triangle

Hello everyone,

I’ve been a bit quiet over the past week because storm Kristin hit my hometown and directly affected my family. My relatives, including my 75 year old mom, were left without water, electricity, or any communications for over a week, and there was widespread destruction in the entire area, with schools, businesses and many homes losing their roofs. I had to go there to help however I could, and between being without internet myself for several days, and just being very worried, posting here wasn’t really possible. Things are still far from normal, but I’m back now, and since I came across several books on sale, I thought I’d ease back in by sharing those with you.

The Collins Conundrum – Currently FREE

Book Blurb:

The course of true love never did run smooth…
All seems well, as far as Elizabeth Bennet can tell. Jane is in love with Bingley, and he with her. Surely marriage is only a short time away. But for Mrs Bennet, securing the eligible bachelor under her roof is a better protection against future poverty than hoping for the prospect of another. And so it is that Elizabeth returns home one day to find her sister engaged, not to Mr Bingley, but to the rather more dreadful prospect of their cousin, Mr Collins.
Begging her father to intervene, the marriage is delayed unless and until Mr Collins can convince Jane to marry him for his own merits, rather than upon her mother’s interference. This sets the redoubtable Mr Collins a task, and he recruits eager Mary Bennet to help him “win fair Jane.” Elizabeth refuses to leave matters to chance, and instead is determined to thrust her sister and Mr Bingley back into one another’s circles again, although this means being at close quarters with Mr Darcy, a man who she so dislikes. Her actions have another unintended consequence, however, when Mr Bingley’s wavering attachment to Jane begins to consider fixing to another fair maiden – Elizabeth herself.
Can everyone find their way to their rightful partners, or is this muddle to end in each married to the wrong person?

Her luck runs out in London when her secret is leaked, and she is once again mobbed by a great deal of unwanted attention. After a few disasters bring her spirit low and eliminates the last shred of respect she has for men in general, Elizabeth decides to forego marriage altogether, and she retires to the countryside.
With Charlotte as her companion, Elizabeth purchases an estate in Derbyshire near her aunt’s hometown of Lambton. There she meets Mr. Darcy, her handsome but reticent neighbor. Over time, Mr. Darcy gradually restores Elizabeth’s faith in men, or at least one man in particular.

Mr. Darcy’s Decision – Currently at 1,99$

Book Blurb:

Marriage isn’t the end of the story, it’s only the beginning—in this delightful and suspenseful follow-up to Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice.
Jane Austen captured hearts with the passion-filled romance of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Now, Mr. Darcy’s Decision finds the couple in their tumultuous first year of married life at Pemberley, entrenched in the frivolous social pressures of their prying friends and family.
While the sharp-tongued duo of Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Caroline Bingley criticizes Elizabeth, the new Mrs. Darcy has a happier matter on her mind—the fact that she is carrying the next Darcy heir. But when the sudden and unexpected return of Elizabeth’s sister Lydia brings alarming reports of seduction and blackmail that threaten the newlyweds’ future, Mr. Darcy is forced to make the most difficult decision of his lifetime . . .
Written in a style that stays true to the Austen’s sardonic wit, Mr. Darcy’s Decision paints a vivid portrait of Regency society—full of romance, tragedy, humor, and intrigue.

Room For Improvement by Jessie Lewis and Amy D’Orazio – Excerpt & Giveaway

Good afternoon everyone,

It’s release day for Room For Improvement, but I was very lucky to receive an advanced paperback copy of it last week, so I already started reading it, and I can safely say that I am loving it! Not only do we have Lord Saye once more, but it seems that Elizabeth and Darcy will have plenty of romantic moments by the sea 😊 I am eager to have some free time to get back to it!

Today we are sharing an excerpt of it, and I hope it entices you to read the book as that would  allow me to speak about it with you without spoilers 😊

Also, I cannot ignore the fact that the book has a stunning cover! Don’t you think? And have I mentioned that it is penned by two of my favourite authors? Well, I have been speaking long enough, and I bet you just want to jump into the excerpt, so go ahead, but don’t forget to leave a comment to apply to the giveaway Quills & Quartos is offering!

Thank you so much for visiting Jessie and Amy!

NEW excerpt

“I tend not to sleep well when I fear the ceiling may collapse on me at any moment,” said Mr Darcy coldly, all the civility that he had shown when they met on the Promenade the previous afternoon now gone. “Or that I might find strangers creeping about outside my bedchamber.”

“Your party arrived early,” she said defiantly. “Lord Saye’s lease has not yet commenced, and thus I had every right to be here at any hour. The house is mine, after all.”

He raised an eyebrow. “I heard nothing in Hertfordshire of you owning property.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “There is a great deal about me you do not know, sir.”

There was a little sound, and Elizabeth saw, over Mr Darcy’s shoulder, another piece of plaster decoration giving way and falling to the floor in a pouf of dust. She pretended not to notice.

“Yes, apparently that is true,” he said coldly. A creeping flush had arisen on his countenance. “The man from last night, is it?”

“Mr Hartham?”

“Is that his name?” Mr Darcy sneered. “I did not care to listen to the introductions.”

“Mr Hartham’s aunt lives next door. He is staying with her.”

“How exceedingly convenient.”

Elizabeth hesitated, feeling there was a hidden meaning in his words that she did not comprehend. “I beg your pardon?”

“I could not have imagined—” He cut himself off and silently shook his head.

“Of what do you accuse me, sir? You seem to have ascribed some manner of misdemeanour to me, but I fear I do not at all understand you.”

Mr Darcy took a step closer to her and, in a lower voice, said, “This is his doing, is it not?” He gestured about him. “He is settling you here.”

At once, she understood him perfectly and her jaw dropped. Rage swelled in her breast, and for a brief moment, she feared she might slap him. With cool dignity, she said, “You are grievously mistaken in both your assumption and your understanding of my character. This house was left to me by my aunt. Not that it is any of your business.”

“Your aunt?”

She could almost hear his incredulity, the disdainful curl of his lips all but shouting, ‘Mrs Philips?’ or ‘Your aunt in Cheapside? I think not!’ She gave a tight nod. “Mrs Agatha Bennet. Widow to my father’s elder brother.”

“I was not aware your father had an elder brother.”

“Why should you be?”

“Well then, why did you not tell me this was your house when we met yesterday?” he demanded.

“I did not know then that my house was where you were staying! Why should I think it had anything to do with you?”

“Because Saye is my cousin!”

“And I was meant to know that? Other than Miss de Bourgh and the colonel, and some mention of a younger sister, I know next to nothing about your family circle.”

“He never mentioned that he was a Fitzwilliam?” Mr Darcy crossed his arms over his chest, mirroring her pose. “Not once?”

She raised one shoulder and allowed it to fall, hoping it communicated her disdain. “Perhaps familial pride is less important to him than it is to some others. In any case, might I ask that you summon him for me? I came here to speak with him, not to have my character defamed.”

She turned her back on him, and began to slowly move about the vestibule, pretending to examine things here and there but in truth, attempting to overcome her anger.

He did not leave. She heard no footsteps, and in fact could clearly hear his respirations, quick and a little ragged, behind her.

“I owe you an apology,” he said finally.

“No matter,” she said airily. “It is what you and I do, is it not? Misunderstand, judge, and then hurl insults at one another.” She came to a stop in front of a window casement and turned to regard him. “I confess, I had believed you did your worst at Hunsford, but I congratulate you for having pained me even more.”

He ran a hand through his hair and sighed heavily. “That was not my intention.”

“Allow me to offer you some counsel in your doings with the fairer sex. Think long and hard before accusing a woman of being kept.”

Mr Darcy permitted his shoulders to slump, and he sighed heavily again. He walked slowly to the window on the opposite side of the front door from the one she was pretending to examine. After a short hesitation, he leant his forehead against the glass and closed his eyes before softly saying, “Jealousy is the green-eyed monster, which doth mock the meat it feeds on.”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Shakespeare.”

“Yes, I know that,” she said. “But your context eludes me.”

He raised his head and offered her a half smile. “I am jealous.”

She tilted her head. “Of Mr Hartham?”

“Of any man who has your friendship,” he replied ruefully. “But since last night, specifically Mr Hartham. I fear such musings, along with the lack of sleep, have rendered me even more ungentlemanly than before.”

Jealous? The word, and the humility in his aspect, softened her. “I am not the sort of woman who—”

“I know. Truly, I do. It was a most absurd thing to say, and I regret it heartily. Only you were with him in the middle of the night, unchaperoned. And then you came in here just now so fresh-faced and more beautiful than ever, and I decided at once that you must be in love with him.”

Wholly discomfited by his frankness, Elizabeth hardly knew what to say or do. He had never told her he thought she was beautiful, not even when he proposed. Rather pitifully, she mumbled, “It is the sea air, I daresay, that makes me…fresh. Not love.”

NEW book blurb

Only imagine a summer by the sea. Perhaps you will meet the love of your life.

When Elizabeth Bennet inherits a crumbling seaside mansion in Brighton, she expects renovation headaches but not romantic chaos. All plans for a peaceful restoration are shattered when the VIscount Saye rents the property before it’s even remotely habitable and arrives to stay with his cousin Mr Darcy in his party.

Mr Darcy, his pride wounded from Elizabeth’s rejection in Kent and his cousin’s insinuation that heartache has made him stout, hopes a seaside escape will do him good. But when his new land lady is revealed to be the woman who spurned him, it soon becomes clear that the house is an apt metaphor for his own romantic aspirations. Every repair reveals a new disaster, every encounter with Elizabeth leads to a heated argument—or a stolen kiss—and no amount of fresh plaster can cover the cracks of their passionately volatile relationship. But there is always room for improvement.

With their undeniable attraction brewing and a house quite literally crumbling around them, can two stubborn hearts find their way to happiness amid the rubble?

Room for Improvement is a low angst, novel length Pride and Prejudice variation set by the sea in Brighton. It is a romantic comedy (RomCom) enemies to friends to lovers variation with a love triangle and a heroic Darcy as well. Content is closed door.

Forced Proximity—Second Chance Romance—Sudden Wealth/Inheritance— Jealousy/Green-Eyed Monster—Love triangles—Misunderstandings—Trapped Together—Protective Hero—Independent/Strong Willed Heroine
