Direct Objects
O We have already seen Direct objects. This is when you replace an object with a pronoun
to avoid repeating it.
O E.g. Paul writes a letter. He sends it.
O Paul écrit une lettre. Il l’envoie.

Direct Objects
O Direct Objects are used when the pronoun is
directly following the verb (i.e. no preposition
in between).
O E.g. Il deteste elle.

O However this doesn’t work in French.
O Replace elle with the direct object (la)
O Then put La in front of the verb

Replace the objects in these
sentences with a pronoun
O Marie voit Paul - Marie le voit
1. Il aime son chat.
2. Je sais la réponse.
3. Nous avons trois chiens.
4. I love you.
5. He hates me.
Indirect objects
O There are also indirect objects which function
the same way direct objects.
O However, their pronouns are slightly different.

What do you notice about the direct and indirect
objects?
Indirect Objects
O Indirect objects are when there is a preposition
(such as à/de) between the verb and the
pronoun.
O E.g Iltéléphone lui
à elle
O Again, this does not work in French.
O Turn à elle into lui
O Then place it before the verb.
Replace the objects in these sentences
with an indirect pronoun
O Je parle à Pierre - Je lui parle.
1. Je parle aux garçons.
2. Elle répond à toi.
3. Je donne le livre à Marie.
4. Nous donnons la lettre aux filles.
How do I know which one
to use?
O If there is the preposition à or pour after the
verb and before the noun it is an indirect
object.
O E.g. Elle parle à ses amis.
O If there is no preposition you can safely
assume that it will require a direct object.
Traps
O Many verbs that are direct in English will
remain direct in French.
O However, not all verbs will follow the pattern.
O E.g. I telephoned my friends (DIRECT)
O J’ai téléphoné à mes amis. (INDIRECT)
O I disobey the teacher. (DIRECT)
O Je désobéis à l’enseignante. (INDIRECT)
