indicated.

Grammar Notes
1. Imparfait vs. Passé Composé
In French, both the imparfait and the passé composé are used to describe the past, but they
serve different purposes:
- Imparfait: used for descriptions, ongoing actions, or repeated actions in the past. Example:
Quand j’étais petit, je jouais dans le jardin. (When I was little, I used to play in the garden.)
- Passé Composé: used for completed actions or single events. Example: Hier, j’ai visité le
musée. (Yesterday, I visited the museum.)
👉 Tip: Think of imparfait as the background and passé composé as the foreground (the main
events).

2. Conditional and Si Clauses

Si clauses (if-clauses) in French often use a pairing of tenses:
- Si + présent → futur simple. Example: Si j’ai le temps, je viendrai. (If I have time, I will
come.)
- Si + imparfait → conditionnel présent. Example: Si j’avais de l’argent, j’achèterais une
voiture. (If I had money, I would buy a car.)
👉 Tip: Use imparfait for the 'if' condition (hypothetical/unreal) and conditionnel for the
result.

3. Futur Simple
The futur simple is used for future actions, similar to 'will' in English. It is formed from the
infinitive + endings (-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont).
Example: Demain, j’irai à Paris. (Tomorrow, I will go to Paris.)

4. Present Tense
The présent de l’indicatif is used for daily routines, facts, and current actions. It is the most
common tense in French.
Example: Je mange une pomme. (I am eating an apple / I eat an apple.)

continuous in English.
