Assia Djebbar, écrivaine et historienne (1936-2015)
Assia Djebbar (pseudonyme de Fatma Zohra Imalayene) est née le
30 juin 1936 à Cherchell ( Algérie). Elle s’est éteinte le 6 février 2015
à Paris, en France. Elle grandit dans une famille de petite bourgeoisie
traditionnelle algérienne. Son père était instituteur issu de l’École
Normale de Bouzaréah,.
Elle passa son enfance à Mouzaia ville (Mitidja), étudia à l’école
française puis dans une école coranique privée. À partir de l’âge de 10
ans, elle étudia au collège de Blida, en section classique (grec, latin,
anglais) et obtient son baccalauréat en 1953. En 1955, elle rejoint l’École Normale Supérieure de
Sèvres (France). Elle est la première femme musulmane et la première Algérienne à être admise.
Son premier roman La Soif parut en 1957, suivi en 1958 par Les Impatients... En 1995, elle
devint professeur titulaire à Louisiana State University de Baton Rouge (États-Unis) . Son œuvre
littéraire est traduite en vingt-trois langues. Elle est élue à l’Académie française, le 16 juin 2005.
Elle devient alors la première écrivaine originaire du Maghreb à être élue à l’Académie française.
